本音と建荊
日本には、本音と建荊ということわざがある。他人の荊
では、自分が思っていることと反対のことを言う。これ
が建荊だ。好きでもない人に会うと、(1)本人の荊ではお
世辞を言っにりするのがその例だ。逆に、自分が正直に
思っていることは本音という。アメリカには本音と建荊
の区別があまりないようだ。もちろん、だからと言っ
て、アメリカ人が他人の悪口を言わないとは思わない。
しかし、基本的に正反対のことを言うことはないよう
だ。この習慣を知らないアメリカ人が目本へ行くと、大
変な誤解が生じることがある。
