Let us take the case of how we look at progress in school in Sweden as an example of this. The whole gets focused more on than the individual’s progress and level in today’s school system. Instead of dividing up an age group into A, B and C classes for math, English and Swedish for example, the general procedure is to have all students study together regardless of the difference in levels. It is seen as more important to value team work and social competence instead of tangible achievements and memorizing.

In another area of Swedish life you will find a similar occurrence, that is to say, in the workforce. At work there are what is called ‘collective labour unions agreements’ so that the whole workforce in general has decent working conditions. It is seen as negative to try to exclusively advance yourself because it may be a threat to the collective. If everyone is average then noone is of lesser standard.

The chances that you will be battling people right after work for groceries are quite high in Sweden. Probably less so now then a couple of years ago when almost all shops closed at 5 PM, but I think you would still be hard-pressed to find a shops that is open after 9pm on a weekend if they aren’t big chains like ICA MAXI, Coop Forum or Willys for example. Especially in smaller towns most shops such as H&M or Galerix (paper and stationary shop) aren’t even open at all on Sundays, recently to more and more peoples frustration.

One reason why these opening hours are kept the way they are, is probably the countless trade unions that enforce workers rights, prioritizing and seeing the importance of living a balanced and healthy life. That being the reason for trying to keep working hours down and within a reasonable time of the day. Swedes in most cases ‘work to live’ and not ‘live to work’. This way people have more time for family, friends and hobbies :)

Earlier this week I was sitting in my bedroom, reading a book and trying very hard to ignore the party going on outside. My apartment building is surrounded by student housing (or “corridors” as they’re called here), and if you want to keep your sanity, you learn very quickly to ignore whatever is going on outside during the university year, or you move elsewhere.

And I was doing just fine with this ignoring bit that night until someone outside started screaming as if he was being skinned alive. And kept screaming. THAT I had to check out. I stuck my head outside and saw a butt naked man running in circles in front of my building shrieking like a banshee. Sadly, it was too dark to take a photo. Other banshees were doing a mosh pit dance some distance away.

My neighbor also stuck her head out. She nodded at me, mumbled “nollning” and retreated to her apartment.
