Fredrik Gynnestam has written a book about three people that all changed in the encounter with each other. People
come from three different backgrounds but despite that, they all identify
themselves with and find similarities in each other. Similarities that make them change, voluntarily or involuntarily and,
above all, they start believing that change is possible. The purpose of this is
that anyone can change regardless of their history or the “context” they are in. In the book, (unlike many
other books of similar genres) also women are highlighted in the brutal
underworld. The writer tries to show us how incredibly strong and brave these women are, living among the
coarse gangsters and how they manage to survive and deal with various
forms of oppression and tyranny.

In the background there is a depiction of society that
emphasizes seriously the avalanche development of criminality. The first trace of organized crime (by today´s standards)  was recognized in 1994 in Gothenburg, ever since then it has only been growing, says Fredrik. In the
current situation, there are around 15 different criminal gangs are listed.

In the book the author describes this development and
combines the most dangerous and most intellectual carachters into a group
called Soldado And Soldiers. Mainly S.A.S and especially their
leader control Gothenburg with an iron fist.

A possible reality if you look at the development
of the Mafia in the United States
and the former Soviet Union, where they also
began on local level so that later it could become an established business empire with the
opportunity to influence its development.

The book also deals with the ordinary citizens’
ambivalent attitude towards criminals. On one hand they should not be
criminals but on the other hand they are judged because they used to be criminals. Most
criminals can not enter the labor market based on criminal records and such.

Something that makes most criminals to give up faith in
change and continue their criminal career. This will
be an incentive for criminals to go on comitting crime for a more sustainable
lifestyle where is no return and the social contempt becomes even greater.

The author wishes to express in the book that we must
help each other to make a change. You can
not just point out the criminals or crime. It is contained in a society regardless of ethnicity,
history, gender and age. We have a responsibility to create a better society.

The author has chosen to do something different with his book. It has developed into a comic book that is web based and comes to life through images and background music for each chapter. Instead of charging for the book the author
has chosen to make a link on the website where you should donate money to the organizations such as
BRIS and Cancer Foundation instead of buying the book by the author.

The book will be released 1st August 2011 on www.soldadosandsoldiers.se

On a Facebook page, you can see the video clips in
which the author (together with the actors) working with different images.

Inspired by Tibor’s book-post from yesterday, I figured it is definitely time for another book competition! This time, the fabulous price is the most popular and bestselling book in Sweden at the moment, Hundraåringen som klev ut genom fönstret och försvann. (Something along the lines of: The hundred year old man who walked out through the window and disappeared). It’s an amazing Forrest Gump-like adventure about 100 year old Allan Karlsson, who decides to escape from his own birthday party and with 50 kronor in his pocket and slippers on his feet, he begins an amazing journey…

I have just read this book myself and boy what a story! I highly recommend it and I’m more than happy to send it anywhere in the world, it deserves to travel! So, in order to get your hands on this little diamond, all you need to do is to leave a comment along with your email address (for my eyes only) in the comment field. I will pick and announce a winner on the 11th of February. The jury consists of me and me only and you might be able to bribe me with sweet talk, fun blog post suggestions, your Swedish stories, book recommendations…  Good luck and happy reading always!

Ladies and gentlemen!!! We have a winner!!! In a totally random drawing, conducted by my mother in law, because I couldn’t find a suitably cute kid named Per or Karin to pull names out of the hat, Kristina became the lucky winner of “Populärmusik från Vittula” – a novel by Mikael Niemi.

Grattis Kristina!!!

Kristina says she’s a tough woman who drives a SAAB. That explains the part about her being tough – someone once told me that SAAB stands for “Swedish Automobiles Always Broken”. As a former SAAB owner myself, I take pity on those who drive SAABs and that fact alone should make her a deserving winner. Yes, I admit it, I’m not a SAAB fan, OK?

I hope that Kristina will like the book. And I think we all should quiz her on it when she’s done reading it.

But guess what? Even if you didn’t win this time, you can still follow the story. And guess what the good news is? You can do it without actually reading the book! Luckily for the rest of us, this splendid novel has been turned into a movie.

I know that some movies totally butcher the original stories their screenplays are based on. But not this one. The director, Reza Bagher, took his time, read the book and did it right.

So I have an idea. While Kristina is busy reading the book this summer, why don’t we try to look up the film version and watch it as our first joint blog project? If finding the film proves too difficult, then (and only as the last resort) there’s the English translation – “Popular Music from Vittula” available in many libraries or from Amazon.

And in September, we can all compare our notes and discuss what we thought of either the film or the book. Or both. So, who’s in?
