The pronoun refers to the indirect object (her). In Spanish we use “la(s)/lo(s)” for the direct object and “le(s)” for the indirect object.

Can anyone explain this grammatical point to me?In the sentence: “Voy a comprarle una
chaqueta de cuero a mi esposa” WHY WHY WHY isn’t the word comprarLA ???Doesn’t
the pronoun refer to UNA CHAQUETA (direct
object) or MI ESPOSA (object of the
preposition “a”) I JUST DON’T GET THIS.

I’m an old lady and I’m just getting into learning Spanish as well as navigating and posting messages on blogs. Hope I don’t embarrass myself.

Just at the beginning stage (4 classes of basic Spanish) at our local senior center. Even though your “Un Poco de Arte” article is well beyond my ability, I enjoy challenging myself with a taste of the advanced stuff every now and then.
