I just love Olga Tañón! This Puerto Rican merengue singer is a burst of energy on the stage and she’s called La Mujer de Fuego (The Woman of Fire). Olga has won several music awards and her music always talks about love and relationships.

Noelia Lorenzo Monge (August 31, 1979 – Puerto Rico), mostly known as Noelia, is a Puerto Rican pop singer who rose to fame in 1999. She is the oldest daughter of Puerto Rican singer Yolandita Monge.

Her self-titled debut album was certified gold in the United States. During her career she has had nine Latin Billboard Top 40 hits. (Wikipedia)

Born in Puerto Rico, Fonsi and his family later moved to Orlando, Florida, during Fonsi’s early childhood. Around the time he was ten years old, Fonsi began to dream about becoming a member of Menudo, a Latin American boy band. While not being able to pursue that dream, he did, however, join many local boy bands, including one, Big Guys, where he met and befriended future *NSYNC member Joey Fatone.

In 1995, Fonsi enrolled at Florida State University to study music. He also joined the school’s choir and sang with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

In April 2005, Fonsi had a brief return to the singing stage, when former Menudo member Ray Reyes invited him and another Puerto Rican, Adamari López, to a concert which was held at San Juan’s Roberto Clemente coliseum. The press widely covered what El Vocero titled as Fonsi’s moment as a Menudo, when he took the stage and joined the members of El Reencuentro to sing some of their old hits.

His stage name Fonsi is actually a nickname that is derived from his middle name Alfonso (alFONSo). The “i” was added to complete the name. (From Wikipedia)

Los Vejigantes

The vejigantes are clown-like characters that can be seen during Carnival time in Puerto Rico. During the festivities of St. James the Apostle (Patron Saint of the city of Loiza), the vejigantes go to the streets to scare people. They usually wear large bright-colored overalls with very large sleeves, which look like bat wings.

They also wear masks made of coconuts. They are cut in a 45-degree angle, the fruit inside is taken out and in the outside part, a grotesque face is carved out, usually painted with very bright colors. The teeth are made from bamboo and the horns are made from banana bunch stems. The vejigantes are also seen in Ponce’s Carnival, but their masks are made of papier mache and usually contain many horns

The vejigantes originated in the 12^th century, when St. James the apostle (Santiago Apóstol, in Spanish) supposedly led the Catholic militia to win a battle over the infidel Moors. The vejigantes represent exactly the defeated Moors because most of Loiza’s inhabitants come from Africa and their forefathers were brought to Puerto Rico during the Spanish conquest as slaves. They didn’t have religious freedom and the Spanish people converted them to Christianity. The vejigantes are a form of keeping their religion mixed with Christianity because they represent the Moors who were not Christians.

Puerto Rico is well-known for its wide range of musical talent and has provided artists like Ricky Martin, Olga Tañón, Luis Fonsi, La India, and Chayanne, just to name a few. The bomba and the plena, the salsa, and the reggaetón are some of the music genres that take over the radio stations nowadays. Make sure you check it out and learn some more about this extremely culturally rich part of Puerto Rican culture.
