What to say when you meet someone (again!)

Hey guys, how’ve you all been?

Well, today’s post brings you some useful expressions when you meet someone for the first time (or not!). They’re informal everyday sentences and therefore use the te pronoun.

Hola : Hello/Hi (formal or informal)

Buenos días : Good day/Good morning

Buen día : Good day/Good morning (Latin America)

Buenas tardes : Good afternoon/Good evening (before 9.00pm)

Buenas noches : Good evening (after 9.00pm)/Good night

Buenas: Shortened version of buenos días, buenas tardes or buenas noches

Adiós : Goodbye

Chau: Goodbye (informal) (Latin America)

Hasta luego: See you later

Hasta mañana: See you tomorrow

Hasta otro día: See you some other time

Hasta pronto: See you soon

¿Cómo estás?: How are you? (informal) (with someone you know on a first-name basis or when speaking with a child)

¿Cómo está?: How are you? (formal)

Muy bien, gracias: Very well, thank you

¿Y tú?: And you? (informal)

¿Y usted?: And you? (formal)

¿Cómo te va? ¿Cómo le va? ¿Qué tal? ¿Qué pasa? ¿Qué hay?:  How’s it going?

Hello, everybody! Let’s learn (or review) some of the most common greetings in Spanish:

Hola – Hello, Hi
Hola, aló, bueno, diga, dígame – Hello (on the telephone)
Adiós – Goodbye/ Chao, Chau (informal, from italian “Ciao”)
Hasta luego – See you later
Hasta pronto – See you soon
¿Cómo estás? / ¿Cómo está? – How are you? (The second form if formal)
Muy bien, gracias. – Very well, thank you.
Buenos días. – Good morning.
Buenas tardes. – Good afternoon – In some areas Buenas tardes is also used in the early evening instead of Buenas noches.
Buenas noches. – Good evening, Good night
¿Cómo te va? / ¿Cómo le va? ¿Qué tal? ¿Qué hay? – How’s it going? What’s happening? What’s up? (¿Cómo le va? is used is used in a formal way)
¿Qué pasa? – What’s happening? What’s up?
¿Qué hubo? ¿Qué onda? – What’s up? How’s it going? (informal sentences)
¿Cómo te llamas? / ¿Cómo se llama usted? – What’s your name? (The second form is formal)
Me llamo Juan. – My name is Juan.
Mucho gusto. / Encantado. – It´s nice to meet you.
Gracias. – Thank you.
De nada. – You’re welcome.
