I just love Olga Tañón! This Puerto Rican merengue singer is a burst of energy on the stage and she’s called La Mujer de Fuego (The Woman of Fire). Olga has won several music awards and her music always talks about love and relationships.

At the airport: the check-in

Traveling is great, isn’t it? You get to meet people, be in places other than your regular city and learn a lot while traveling. So in this post I’m going to give you some useful expressions for when you’re at the check-in counter at the airport.

Su pasaporte, por favor.
Passport, please.

¿Cuántas maletas lleva?
How many bags are you checking?

Coloque la maleta en la balanza, por favor.
Place your bag on the scale, please.

¿Tiene usted equipaje de mano?
Do you have any carry-on luggage?

Lo siento, pero tendrá que pagar exceso de equipaje.
I’m afraid you will have to pay for excess baggage.

¿Prefiere ventana o pasillo?
Do you prefer a window seat or an aisle seat?

Aquí tiene su tarjeta de embarque. El embarque se realizará por la puerta 12.
Here’s your boarding pass. You’re boarding at gate 12.

Se dará inicio al embarque a las 9.
The plane starts boarding at 9 o’clock.

Lo siento, pero el vuelo está atrasado.
I’m afraid the flight has been delayed.

Lo siento, pero el vuelo ha sido cancelado.
I’m afraid the flight has been canceled.

Learning tip: Attitude!

Hi, everybody! How have you been?

Well, I was thinking the other day and I came to the conclusion that one of the most important things when you set out to do something new is to have attitude. I mean, not a nasty attitude towards anything but a very positive and proactive attitude.

You may tell me, “But Adir, Spanish is so different from English, there are so many verb forms, tenses that are not used in English” and all that kind of talk. But I come from the school of hard knocks so I always think: if someone has done it, I can do it, too!

That takes a truckload of determination, patience, hard work and consistency. And let me tell you something: it feels awesome when things (language patterns) start falling into place and you see, in your head, how the language is built.

Each person learns differently and one thing you need to do is find out what’s your language learning style: visual, auditory, if you need to write things down (my style!), and so son. As soon as you know “how” you learn, you just need to find a good source of materials and be consistent in your study.

To sum it up, have a good attitude towards learning Spanish because as my mom says, “Knowledge occupies no room”, meaning the more we know, the more there is to know. Isn’t that a great thought?
