One of our readers, who signs his comments here as Stas, sent me a mail with the following link today: “Тест: Знаете ли вы русский язык?” [Test: Do You Know Russian Language?] He told me that he scored 7 out of the 8 questions right, something that, according to statistics, only 15% of Russians are capable of. The structure of the test reminded me of the sample questions from the ЕГЭ (Единный Государственный Экзамен) [Unified State Exam] that were published in my favorite Russian paper, Русский Репортёр, back in May, at a time when almost every schoolkid in Russia was trying their best to pass the two exams in Russian Language and Maths. At the same time their parents and teachers were screaming to the press that the test was pure abuse and therefore against the law, while universities threated to not pay any attention to its results anyway. For the fun of it, I decided to try my luck (and, I suppose, also my knowledge) and test my Russian…
My results were as follows:
“Вы ответили на 6 из 8 простых вопросов. Не самый плохой результат на общем фоне. Скорее всего, вы неплохо знали русский язык в школе, просто было это давно, и теперь учебник Розенталя для вас заменяет грамматическая автопроверка в “Ворде”. Гордиться вам особенно нечем, но для выживания в среде носителей русского языка этого вполне хватит. Таких, как вы, в стране, согласно опросу ВЦИОМа, – 21%.”
[You answered (correctly) 6 out of 8 simple questions. Not the very worst result in general. Most likely you knew Russian rather well in school, just that it was a long time ago and now Rozental's textbook has been changed for you by the spellcheck of Word. You have nothing to be especially proud of, but for survival in an enviroment of Russian speakers this is enough. 21% of the people in the country are like you, according to statistics.]
Well, even though I shouldn’t be proud, I kind of am anyway. Do try it out for yourselves! See if you can beat me or Stas…

Вы один из немногих носителей элитарного знания, доступного в наше время единицам (4% от общего числа опрошенных). Второй вариант: вы – выпускник, которого хорошо натаскали на сдачу экзамена по русскому языку. Третий вариант: вы – репетитор. Или просто закончили филологический факультет и пошли работать не по специальности.
Although I’m not a citizen of Russia, and never was… And I don’t have that “elitar” knowledge… And neither I was set on the Russian exams… And neither I’m a tutor… But it’s my first language indeed.

This test gave me more confidence in my knowledge of Russian. Although born in Russia, I have not lived there since I was 10 years old. That is when my usage of Russian was reduced to mostly spoken. Now, 18 years later, I’m glad to know that I haven’t lost it

My score suggests that I am probably an expat or a foreign worker. Touche!
