Russia’s independent media has been muffled by the Kremlin in recent years, but a few frantic voices are still trickling through. Радио Свобода and Эхо Москвы cover some more risky topics.
Радио Свобода
Радио Свобода is the Russian version of Radio Free Europe, and still funded by western governments, in a large part by the U.S. It’s not quite a Voice of America, but it’s certainly fundamentally democratic. The word on the street is that funding will be cut to support similar stations in the Middle East.
Эхо Москвы
Эхо Москвы broadcasts out of Moscow, and for some reason hasn’t been shut down. It is very popular and well known in the capitol and among ex patriots.
