Like any other town with a little bit of self-respect, my Russian hometown at the moment, Yekaterinburg, has its own website with all sorts of indispensable information about the city, enlightening both for locals and visitors. The portal’s address is www.e1.ru and the other day I came across a piece there which screamed out loud and clearly what every single citizen of this city is thinking these days – that it’s dirty here. Down right filthy. Incredibly muddy. As a foreigner you can get away with wearing the only foot wear capable of resistance – резиновые сапоги [rubber boots] – and thus still be able to move around streets that are soaked with a special kind of black or brown ‘chunky’ water. If you’re Russian you will of course not submit yourself to such a Western faupaux in public and rather spend about thirty minutes every night scrubbing your shoes clean. This is my fourth spring in Russia, the second in the Urals, and I thought my disgust at the rivers of mud outside was only a result of me getting more sensitive with age. Little did I know that I am actually getting more tolerant and that the streets here are actually gross enough for our city to be awarded the prize of “Russia’s Dirtiest City”. Anyone who has been to Russia in spring time can confirm that such a prize is saying a lot, and earning it is only possible through ‘the natural calamity known under the name of “spring in Russia’s third capitol”’.

Don’t let the ‘exterior of cleanness’ fool you into thinking this street is harmless – the menace of гололёд (or гололедица) [black ice] is lurking everywhere.

Also, while I’m at it, I would like to know if anyone might know how to put the stress in the Russian words in a correct way? When you write by hand what you usually do is put an apostrophe over the stressed vowel, but no matter how I try I can’t seem to put an apostrophe over the text in Cyrillic when I’m writing on my computer. Anyone who might know or have any ideas? I don’t want to place stress by making the stressed letters in thick shrift, but I guess I have no other choice.

«Грязный Екатеринбург попал в сатирический киножурнал “Фитиль”

Миллионы россиян на следующей неделе смогут “полюбоваться” на непролазную бескрайнюю грязь, накрывшую улицы Екатеринбурга. О стихийном бедствии под названием “весна в третьей столице России” языком сатиры расскажет киножурнал “Фитиль”.

Как стало известно, в редакцию программы за помощью неоднократно обращались жители Екатеринбурга. Люди жаловались на городские власти, не желающие содержать улицы в чистоте, из-за чего столица Среднего Урала ежегодно превращается в одно сплошное болото. На прошлой неделе съёмочная группа “Фитиля” побывала в Екатеринбурге и лично во всем убедилась.

“Засняли мы вашу жуткую грязь в полной красе и объеме… Вот сейчас прямо сижу, монтирую сюжет, – рассказала журналист киножурнала “Фитиль” Надежда Леонтьева. – Жаль, только не удалось нам увидеться с главным героем – мэром Чернецким. Вместо него с нами его пресс-секретарь разговаривал, убеждал, что закуплено чуть ли не 150 миллионов единиц техники уборочной. Еще мы записали слова одного из депутатов местной гордумы, который рассказал, какие в действительности средства тратятся на благоустройство города. Еще побывали на брифинге у областного премьера“.

Украсить сюжет, по словам журналистов “Фитиля”, они хотели и высказываниями известного актера Станислава Садальского в эфире программы “Утренний экспресс”, однако, на телекомпании “4 канал” отказались переписать коллегам из Москвы компрометирующий Екатеринбург и его руководство материал. Предположительно сюжет про самый грязный город страны выйдет в эфире телеканале “Россия” уже на следующей неделе.»
