The reason Brazil is spelled with a 'Z' is because that's how it was spelled when the country was founded. Have a read of the constitution from 1824: http://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/Constituicao/Constitui%C3%A7ao24.htm

All the best, Chris

either way I am learnig a falar Portugese thanks for the free help that transparant.com does. Many years ago I used to buy CD from transparent that gave the base so I can now understand like the song 40 GRAUS in Portugese.

I think that the reason is languages tend to write their words in the way they are pronounced and not in the way other languages write them. So, in English, it's more frequent to have the letter "z" for the sound "zzz." In Portuguese, "z" is a much more foreign language and they have the "s" for the sound "z."
I hope it helps. If you ever get a better answer, please let me know.
