I agree 100% with all of the above but would just like to add, that if your a language lover or someone whos keen on mastering more than one language (like me), portuguese is the best place to start because with portuguese you can learn other latin based languages with ease.
For example i have never studied spanish a day in my life but with the portuguese i know i can already understand part of the language and the same with french. It’s Great!
Great points, Carlon I totally agree. Italian comes quite naturally to someone who has learned Portuguese as well, I’ve learned from personal experience.
What do you think of the notion that Portuguese is somehow ‘in between’ French, Spanish and Italian?

That’s totally true, Portuguese is the most beautiful language!! And Brazilian Portuguese is much more rich than the Portuguese from Portugal!! Brazil is awesome!

Brazillian Portuguese is a really awesome and nice speaking language, but in pratical terms, it’s too difficult(at least for me), the grammar is too large and require plenty of dedication to say something right.

I agree, portuguese is a very extense language, you need to like it, because it has some parts of the grammar that need a lot of attention. But is good language!

I teach advanced English here in Rio to the business community and to University students intending to further their studies abroad….I´m also trying to learn Portuguese. Sure, it´s difficult but no more difficult than Portuguese speakers that confront EL phrasal verbs and prepositions.
Oh Luiz Fernando Medina! You forgot to mention Machado de Assis, who in my mind is finest author of Portuguese literature. He´s my number 2 reason why gringos should embrace Portuguese. Fancy going through life never knowing of Machado de Assis?

hi, everybody, I`m very proud for being brazilian. Not only because I was born in Rio de Janeiro, but I do love our literature. Vinicius de Moraes was, in my opinion, the most one. I study Portuguese at the university, and I consider verbs the hardest thing to learn… We have many modal verbs…Even we don`t know how to use all of them… I like studying them very much…

I don’t wanna be a “will-crasher or, estraga prazeres” but I’m a brazilian, and I must say, portuguese is almost useless because if you speak spanish they understand you. Well, al least in São Paulo, southern regions, Rio and, maybe, in federal district a hispanic-foreigner will surelly have no languague-comprehension trouble. On the other hand, if you go deep in the Amazon rainforest, I can’t even assure you they’ll undestand portuguese . Furthermore, what’s the point of ordinary north american tourist learn portuguese! He’ll only be able to practice in Brazil, Portugal – which is even, for us, brazilians, hard to understand, because they have a srong accent, we say it’s “arrastado” – Angola, Moçambique and some small islands over the Atlantic Ocean -by the way, in Africa-. Moreover, portuguese is a difficult language to learn and correctly speak – we have most of the phonemes, which I can remember, we just do not have the TH sound from english, but of course, there are others – and many ^~`´ – I don’t know the word, that are tricky even for the natives – . However, despite all the disadventages mentioned above, if you do learn it, you’ll have achieved many skills that will help you with others latin-based languages, such as french, spanish and italian. The reason for so, is that there is a theory which says: first, the latin has come, then, the italian, french, spanish and finally, portuguese – kind of an “improved” language. But, if you’re a businessman or a language-learning fanatic I’d say it’s important to know how to speak portuguese, because there are many words in spanish that when “decoded” by portuguese native-speakers, achieve a completely odd meaning from the original. For instance: Oficina in spanish means office, but in portuguese, means workshop. And there are many particular words that have their meaning utterly misundestood, that may cause embarrassing situations . On the whole, I’d say as a São Paulo native, you do not need to speak portuguese for your vacations, but if you’re open-minded enough for this experience, GO FOR IT, don’t waste your precious time reading this bunch of bollocks.
learning portugues in brazil just makes sense if you want to
1 communicate
2 have fun
3 understand the music, the poetry
4 understand the jokes , as brasilians are always playing
finally – just throw away grammar books, and immerse yourself in the language, like a child. I bought a dictionary, and Stupid White Men, in portuguese. picked up phrases, with some books and go out and listen, like a child and copy.
If you don’t hear it, ask people to repeat! the more fun you have and want to communicate, the easier it is.

I think Portuguese (or, at least, Brazilian Portuguese) is the most beautiful language I’ve ever heard. It has a lilting, almost musical quality to it. I learned it about 5 years ago while in Brazil. I didn’t meet anyone who spoke English, so I had to learn, and I loved it.
