For some reason I can’t get this song out of my head… Zeca Baleiro is one of my newest obsessions and the lyrics to “Telegrama,” make me laugh and smile and just feel good inside, so I thought I’d share with you all.

Test out your listening (sort of) and try to figure out the meaning of the lyrics by watching this video I found with images and then read the lyrics!

Telegrama de Zeca Baleiro

Eu tava triste
Tristinho!
Mais sem graça
Que a top-model magrela
Na passarela
Eu tava só
Sozinho!
Mais solitário
Que um paulistano
Que um canastrão
Na hora que cai o pano
Tava mais bôbo
Que banda de rock
Que um palhaço
Do circo Vostok…

Mas ontem
Eu recebi um Telegrama
Era você de Aracaju
Ou do Alabama
Dizendo:
Nêgo sinta-se feliz
Porque no mundo
Tem alguém que diz:
Que muito te ama!
Que tanto te ama!
Que muito muito te ama,
que tanto te ama!…
Por isso hoje eu acordei
Com uma vontade danada
De mandar flores ao delegado
De bater na porta do vizinho
E desejar bom dia
De beijar o português
Da padaria…

Hoje eu acordei
Com uma vontade danada
De mandar flores ao delegado
De bater na porta do vizinho
E desejar bom dia
De beijar o português
Da padaria…

Mama! Oh Mama! Oh Mama!
Quero ser seu!
Quero ser seu!
Quero ser seu!
Quero ser seu papa!…(2x)

Eu tava triste
Tristinho!
Mais sem graça
Que a top-model magrela
Na passarela
Eu tava só
Sozinho!
Mais solitário
Que um paulistano
Que um vilão
De filme mexicano
Tava mais bôbo
Que banda de rock
E um palhaço
Do circo Vostok…

Me dê a mão vamos sair Prá ver o sol!

Great news for all language students! The TED website allows you to watch videos (all in English) with subtitles in dozens of languages! This means you can practice your Portuguese skills by adding subtitles to English videos where they are available. When you click the links, just look for the text below the video that says “Subtitles available in...”

Watching English video with Portuguese subtitles is a great way that expats often practice their language skills when living abroad, and is one of the ways I found really helpful to learn new vocabulary words. It’s something you are often forced to do without thinking about it when living in Brazil, but while in your home country, it’s a bit more difficult. Here’s your chance!

Plus, TED has several great videos of Brazilians discussing a range of different topics. Check them out!

Globo Amazônia has launched a really cool new feature where readers and activists can send in their videos discussing why the Amazon and environmental preservation are important.

Watch Cristiane Torloni’s video and then see if you can answer the following questions:

1. What two words does she use to describe “failure?”

2. What event does she discuss in the video?

3. What is the Portuguese word for “document?”

For those of you who can’t make it to a Brazilian Day celebration, I’m leaving you with a few videos from past Brazilian Days in New York. Have a happy holiday weekend!

Today, on the video learning series, we’re going to look at novelas. Though it’s more gratifying to watch them in their entirety, watching novela clips online can be a very useful way to practice listening comprehension, because the language is relatively straightforward.

In the clips below, you’ll see scenes from recent novelas, including Caminho das Indias, Três Irmãs, and Caras e Bocas.

Happy listening!
