This week is Dia das Crianças, Children’s Day, on Wednesday! If you have any Brazilian friends on Facebook, you’ve probably seen tons of profile pictures turned to cartoon characters in honor of the day and causes against violence against children. It’s a holiday that’s taken very seriously in Brazil where children are given gifts and, being on the same day as Dia de Nossa Senhora Aparecida, our patron saint, it’s a national holiday!

To celebrate Dia das Crianças, I’ve decided to post a traditional children’s song with lyrics for you to teach the little ones in your life! :-)

Se a Rua Fosse Minha - If the Street Was Mine

Se essa rua se essa rua fosse minha
If this street, if this street was mine
Eu mandava eu mandava ladrilhar
I would order, I would order that it be tiled
Com pedrinhas com pedrinhas de brilhantes
With pebbles, with pebbles of diamond
Para o meu para o meu amor passar
For my love, for my love to pass
Nesta rua nesta rua tem um bosque
On this street, on this street there’s a forest
Que se chama que se chama solidão
That is called, that is called loneliness
Dentro dele dentro dele mora um anjo
Inside it, inside it lives an angel
Que roubou que roubou meu coração
Who has stolen, who has stolen my heart
Se roubei se roubei teu coração
If I’ve stolen, if I’ve stolen your heart
Tu roubaste tu roubaste o meu também
You have stolen, you have stolen mine as well
Se roubei se roubei teu coração
If I’ve stolen, if I’ve stolen your heart
É porque, só porque te quero bem.
It’s because, just because I wish you well.

While here at Portuguese Blog we like to share the best of classic Brazilian music with our readers, we also like to bring you fresh, new music from emerging artists. So today is one of those days!

Meet Garotas Suecas (Swedish Girls), a Brazilian band that is actually mostly men. Formed in 2005, they won a VMB Award (the Brazilian version of the MTV Video Awards) in 2008, and performed as SXSW this year. They were recently featured on NPR’s First Listen, where you can sample the band’s first full length album, Escaldante Banda, in its entirety. You can also learn more about them on MySpace and in this interview at SXSW.

Though watching movies and TV shows with subtitles can be very useful when learning Portuguese, it is also fun and educational to watch movies you are very familiar with that are dubbed into Portuguese. Children’s movies are most often dubbed, and Disney cartoons are an excellent way to pick up new words and phrases. Watch these clips and see if it’s easier to understand, knowing the English and the plot beforehand. You have to love Ariel with a Carioca accent!

The three movies in Portuguese are O Rei Leão, A Bela e a Fera, and A Pequena Sereia. Do you know which is which? What are some other popular cartoons in Portuguese?

In this new series, I’ll feature cool new bands and singers from Brazil. If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment and I’ll include it in the next post.

Okê Arô is a band based in Sao Paulo, featuring lead singer Paula Pretta. They play African-influenced music associated with Afro-Brazilian religion, blended with modern electronic music. They incorporate Afro-Brazilian culture into their live shows with multimedia and live performances. The name comes from a common refrain of the Afro-Brazilian god Oxóssi, which he uses as a greeting.

Caetano Veloso, one of Brazil’s most beloved musicians and songwriters, has released a new CD, Zii e zie. It’s now on sale in Brazil and abroad (see here and here).

Caetano composed the songs in Rio de Janeiro last year, when it was very rainy, and was inspired by the weather. He also includes aging and the Brazilian political reality as themes. The title of the album means uncle and aunt in Italian, but Caetano says he wanted the title to sound nonsensical and odd. You can read more about the CD on his blog and hear more in the interview below. You can also listen to one of his new songs here.
