I think that the reason is languages tend to write their words in the way they are pronounced and not in the way other languages write them. So, in English, it's more frequent to have the letter "z" for the sound "zzz." In Portuguese, "z" is a much more foreign language and they have the "s" for the sound "z."
I hope it helps. If you ever get a better answer, please let me know.

I definitely love Rio...Sao Paulo is too big, too confusing...Rio has the beaches, the sun, the amazing history, the beautiful people scantily dressed....is screams relaxation and vacation while Sao Paulo makes you think of work and reminds you of all the huge cities in the US with plenty of crime, poverty and people

Instead of pandering to gays, how about cleaning up the favelas which makes Rio the international murder capital of the world? I'd like to go to both the World Cup and the Olympics with my family but am scared.

I speak spanish and there is nothing like that in spanish. As for the past perfect portuguese, like spanish you can say, for example: voçe tinha tido or eu tinha visto. So are you saying that portuguese has two past perfect tenses? What is the difference between eu tinha visto and eu vira...?

Just saw "Era Uma Vez no Rio"... The last comments of the actor were not traslated and they were the most important words in the movie.
Considering what happened in Rio this past weekend this movie was very on TARGET. Slums, drugs and gangs.
