Epoca’s Brazilian Blog Picks

Posted by Rachel

This week, Epoca Magazine released a list of recommended international and Brazilian blogs. Let’s take a look at some of the Brazilian picks:

Orkut, the Brazilian Facebook

Posted by Rachel

In Brazil, the most used social networking site on the Internet, which has become wildly popular nationwide, is known as Orkut (pronounced Or-coo-chee). It was created in 2004 by a Turkish Google employee and originally was marketed in the United States. Gradually, though, its two largest markets became Brazil and India, which make up 55% and 16% of total users, respectively.

Brazilians use Orkut to stay in touch with friends, post photos, and share information about themselves. Like Facebook, there is a wall, called “scraps,” used to leave messages on each person’s profile, and also an area to join groups, which on Orkut are called communities. You can also send private messages, post videos, and leave “depoimentos,” telling your friends how you feel about them.

If you’re looking to make friends while living or traveling in Brazil, or even if you’re looking to do business here, it’s a good idea to set up an Orkut account!

Let’s Discuss: How to Comment on the Blog

Posted by admin

comment.jpgI hear so many fascinating things from you, the readers of the Portuguese Blog who email me your thoughts. These are often ideas that would benefit the readership as a whole, so I encourage you all to come comment on the Blog posts.

Clearly some posts are natural conversation-starters, and others may just be another tidbit of knowledge. A blog doesn’t need to be polemic to be useful or interesting; as long as all you wonderful readers out there are familiar with the comment system, and that your thoughts are more than welcome, I’m happy.

First off, let’s review where the comments are! They are located at the end of each post. For those of you who prefer to read the articles in email, I will be installing a little link, so you can click through right to the comments, to jump into the discussion easily. Look for a link that says ‘Comente!’ at the end of the posts you get by email.

For fun, the comment section is now named Comentário; a small change.

It ought to be stated as well that everyone is welcome to post in English, Portuguese, or any language they feel like commenting in. No topic is off-limits, though I will monitor for obscenity. Also, no login is needed, and you can post anonymously if you wish.

Is there anything that you wish was part of the comment system, or on the blog in general? Are there topics you would like us to address in upcoming posts and podcasts?

Delicious

del.icio.us.png

Here’s a terrific discovery tool that you can use to find more great resources for learning Portuguese.

del.icio.us is a powerful tool for researching and bookmarking anything!

Looking for a new way to keep track of your bookmarks as well as find great information you never would have come across? Look no further.

del.icio.us is a social bookmarking service that lets you save your bookmarks not in your web browser, but actually on their site, so you can get them from anywhere. On top of that, you can find great sites that lots of people have bookmarked. Here’s an example, a search for “portuguese” on delicious. Pretty cool, huh?

You may have noticed that all the Portuguese Blog posts have a little ‘delicious’ link at the bottom of them, even when you get them in email. Once you have a delicious account (free, of course) , you can save your favorite posts by just clicking that link. By doing this you are also making it easier for people who are looking for the information in that post to find it, which makes your faithful blog writer very happy :-)

Other more advanced features of delicious include the ability to tag your bookmarks to easily categorize them. Let’s say you are really into Italian, and also skydiving. Well, you could save all your language bookmarks with the tag ‘italian,’ and all your skydiving sites/articles with ’skydiving.’ Then when you look at your bookmarks, you can sort them with just a click and see only the ’skydiving’ bookmarks, for example.
