Video Learning Series: President Lula

This week, we’re going to practice learning comprehension by watching three videos featuring Brazilian President Lula Inácio da Silva. The president has a Northeastern accent, so it may be a bit challenging for beginners to understand.

In the first video, President Lula talks about soccer and his favorite team. In the second, he addresses Brazilians living abroad, and in the third, discusses social inclusion and the Internet.

Election Day

Yesterday was election day in Brazil, when Brazilians voted for mayor and city councilmen. Though some mayors have been officially elected, others have not. To be elected, the candidate must get at least 50% of the votes. If he gets less, there is a run-off between the top two candidates. Let’s take a look at some of the results:

Mayor of Curitiba: Beto Richa

Mayor of Fortaleza: Luizianne Lins

Mayor of Goiânia: Iris Rezende

Mayor of Recife: João da Costa

The following cities are going to have run-off elections between the top two candidates:

Rio de Janeiro: Eduardo Pães and Fernando Gabeira

São Paulo: Marta Suplicy and Gilberto Kassab

Belo Horizonte: Marcio Lacerda and Leandro Quintão

Porto Alegre: José Fogaça and Maria do Rosário

Salvador: João Carneiro and Walter Pinheiro

 

Obama Running for Office…in Brazil

Local elections are rapidly approaching in Brazil. According to the Brazilian press, at least five candidates running in the local elections throughout the country are using the name “Barack Obama” in an effort to garner votes. The candidates, who are running for municipal positions, have registered their names as Obama on the ballots. The would-be Obamas include:

  • Brazilian Epaminondas Obama, running for a seat outside of São Paulo
  • Obama, a woman running in Rio de Janeiro state
  • Davi, the Obama of the Community, running in Minas Gerais
  • “Barak Obama,” running in Paraná
  • Alexandre Barack Obama, running in Petrolina
  • Barack Obama of Belford Roxo, running in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro
