Vivo released a seven minute commercial starring Pelé for the World Cup, and they also put together a nice behind the scenes video about the making of the epic commercial. Have a look and try to answer the questions.

Pelé, also known as O Rei, or the King, is very busy during the World Cup, even though he hasn’t played soccer for years. He now serves as an unofficial ambassador for Brazil, and as in any soccer-loving country, he is always welcomed with open arms.

In South Africa, he attended an exhibition with works of art he helped create:

Plus, around the World Cup time, he gets more endorsements than ever:

Sadly, though, he’s not immune to petty, silly talk, be it from the Chinese media or from the competition:

Hey everyone. The World Cup is going on and Brazilians are just crazy about it, at least most of us. Check out this video I made about how my city (Montes Claros – Minas Gerais)  is turning green and yellow and also some reactions to Brazil’s first game.

Is this different from your country?

Today Brazil takes on North Korea in both teams’ first matches in the 2010 World Cup hosted by South Africa!   And here in Brazil, everyone’s breathing World Cup season, especially sponsors and anyone who can make any money with “World Cup” specials.  And as usual, Nike has a pretty interesting campaign going on.  They’re putting together a documentary in honor of Jorge Ben’s song, “Ponta de Lança Africano (Umbabarauma)”(1976).  Which is a song about an African point man, but in reality speaks to any Brazilian who’s ever played pick up soccer in the middle of a dusty street.  This song practically predicted the world cup in South Africa over 30 years later perfectly mixing African and Brazilian and European beats.

Here’s a video from the 80′s (i.e., the image isn’t that great) produced by David Byrne and which alludes to everything that is Umbabarauma :-)

And here’s the Nike remake with Jorge Ben Jor, Mano Brow and a number of other great Brazilian artists:

Today we’re going to do a little listening comprehension exercise using a short report from BBC Brasil (which by the way, is a fantastic resource for Portuguese students).
