Born Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho, this Brazilian is not only the most famous modern architect in his own country but is also famous world-wide.
He
was born to Jewish parents in 1907 in Rio de Janeiro’s middle class
Laranjeiras neighborhood. He attended the School of Fine Arts before
beginning his career in architecture. He also joined the Communist
Party and later inhis life met several famous communist leaders, and as
a result was forced into exile during the military regime in the 1960s.
He moved to Paris and only returned to Brazil in the 1980s.
Niemeyer, age 100, is a prolific architect, and has created dozens of famous modern works throughout the world. His most famous works include:
- Ministry of Culture, Rio de Janeiro
- Maracana Stadium, Rio de Janeiro
- the Sambodrome, Rio de Janeiro
- the Church of St. Francis, Pampulha, Brazil
- United Nations Headquarters (with others), New York, New York
- Communist Party Headquarters, Paris, France
- Contemporary Art Museum, Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- National Congress, Presidential Palace, National Museum, Cathedral and other buildings in Brasilia, Brazil
- Oscar Niemeyer Museum, Curitiba, Brazil

Sou uma fa do Oscar e gostaria de saber o seu e-mail. Moro em Melbourne, Australia, e aqui tem um predio residencial e muito popular que tem uma estrutura no teto que e’ a copia da Igreja da Pampulha em Belo Horizonte- MG. Sou mimeira e me veio a duvida de que alguem poderia ter copiado uma obra do Oscar, o que seria um plagio no sentido literal. Sera’ que alguem pode me ajudar a esclarecer esse fato? I have visited Brasilia several times and have been fascinated by the Niemeyer architecture. He is truly the architect of the future, even today. One can appreciate the genius of his work in the geometry of his buildings that although straight and simple evoke a sense of awe and comfort.
Brazil has always been called the Country of the Future and it Always Will Be. In the past, people have been let down. But, there is a growing sense that that was the past and the future is Brazil’s.
