Best Brazilian Movie

Posted by Rachel

Since we discussed the topic earlier in the week, for today’s interactive feature we’re going to talk about movies. Today’s question is: what is your favorite Brazilian film?

Unfortunately, due to a low popularity in foreign films, not many Brazilian films are released in US theaters, and those who have seen Brazilian movies have usually just seen City of God. But there are a lot of great ones out there worth seeing that you can find on DVD, through Netflix, or ordering them online.

My personal favorite is Central do Brasil (Central Station) directed by Walter Salles and starring Brazilian film star Fernanda Montenegro. It was nominated for two Oscars in 1999 and won numerous international film awards, and really is a spectacular movie. It tells the story of an older woman who befriends a young boy in Rio de Janeiro, and the journey they take together in search of the boy’s father.

What about you?

I like Tropa de Elite, Estomago, and another film whose name I can’t remember that is a comedy about an older man having a mid life crisis and he keeps going through the same train accident over an over again until he gets his life right with his wife and children… =)

Bom estudo e boa sorte :)

I saw “Mais Uma Vez Amor” about a month ago and I really enjoyed it. It’s a comedy about a guy and a girl who meet when they are young, and then continue a love affair for like 17 years, but never marry. It has a great storyline which keeps you interested, and it’s very funny.

    O Homem Que Copiava!!!

Light and creative, it is a nice change of pace from the theme of poverty that seems a bit too common in the films that make it out of Brazil to a wider audience.

Though I agree that Central Station is a phenomenal movie, I like some of the classic films of Brazilian cinema like Bye bye Brasil and Dona Flor e os dois Maridos. Jose Wilker, who is featured in them both, is a talented actor and is probably in the hall of fame of great brazilian actors.

O Ano em Que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias

I cried to death towards the end of the movie. It was so warm and very touching.

Just saw “Era Uma Vez no Rio”… The last comments of the actor were not traslated and they were the most important words in the movie.
Considering what happened in Rio this past weekend this movie was very on TARGET. Slums, drugs and gangs.
