This week, we’re going to start off with the BYKI list and then tomorrow work on the podcast. The purpose of this exercise is to first work on pronunciation and understanding how to say the words, and then work on memorizing the vocabulary and the meanings of the words.

Click here to listen to the BYKI list! See below for the list of phrases.

Obrigado.

Podcast time is coming up soon, and for today’s interactive feature, the question is: what topic would you like to hear on the next podcast?

To all the U.S.-based readers, Feliz Dia de Ação de Graças!

On Monday, Globo Brazil’s Caminho das Indias novela won the Best Soap Opera award at the International Emmy Awards in New York. The show, which was one of the most popular TV programs in Brazil during its run, beat out its competition from France and the Philippines.

The show’s creator, Maria Perez, says the show has been purchased by 80% of Latin American countries, where it will be broadcast in the coming months. She is also in talks to sell the show to India, which would give the Indian audience a peek at how Brazilians view their country.

Members of the cast attended the ceremony and helped celebrate the win.

Today, we’re going to do a listening practice with Maria Rita‘s song “Estrela, estrela.” This particular video has (imperfect) subtitles in English, but I’m going to include the original Portuguese lyrics so you can practice twice: one, matching the English translations to the song, and the second, following along with the Portuguese words. Though the lyrics are relatively simple, they use tu rather than você, so it’s a bit trickier to understand.

Estrela, estrela

Estrela, estrela
Como ser assim
Tão só, tão só
E nunca sofrer

Brilhar, brilhar
Quase sem querer
Deixar, deixar
Ser o que se é

No corpo nu
Da constelação
Estás, estás
Sobre uma das mãos

E vais e vens
Como um lampião
Ao vento frio
De um lugar qualquer

É bom saber
Que és parte de mim
Assim como és
Parte das manhãs

Melhor, melhor
É poder gozar
Da paz, da paz
Que trazes aqui

Eu canto, eu canto
Por poder te ver
No céu, no céu
Como um balão

Eu canto e sei
Que também me vês
Aqui, aqui
Com essa canção

Yesterday, British pop star Sting met with several indigenous leaders Caiapó tribe to discuss the Brazilian government’s plans to construct a massive hydroelectric plant in the state of Pará, which would affect the Caiapó’s lands.

Sting met the leaders twenty years ago on the Xingu reservation, which inspired him to create a non-profit, the Rainforest Foundation, which works to protect the environment as well as indigenous tribes in the Amazon. The NGO has donated funds to help the Caiapó tribe with education and protection from land invaders.

In the meantime, Sting met with the leaders to discuss the plans for the dam, to ensure that the indigenous tribes play a part in negotiations with the government. Environmental leaders are opposed to the project, which they say would be harmful to the Amazon, and the government has not yet acquired the necessary environmental permit to begin construction.
