For today’s interactive feature, we’re going to discuss Portuguese websites.

The question is: which websites (other than this one) do you use to help you learn Portuguese?

Though I personally learned Portuguese mostly through speaking, I use news sites to help practice my reading skills, like O Globo, Folha, and Terra. But there are a few free sites out there that teach Portuguese. Which ones do you use?

One excellent way to practice your language skills is by constantly exposing yourself to the language and by giving yourself at least one “dose” of the language written and spoken each day. One way to give yourself a dose of written Portuguese each day is by using Twitter, the popular and free microblogging service.

I’ve put together a list of useful Twitter users that will help you practice reading and writing in Portuguese.

  • Make sure you follow Transparent’s Brazilian Portuguese Twitter account connected to this blog, Brazillanguage;
  • Portuguesemdia, which discusses Portuguese language and literature;
  • GVOPT, which is Global Voices, the online news site, in Portuguese;
  • OzzyStudy, which provides useful vocabulary in Portuguese.

This week kicks off Rio de Janeiro’s first Restaurant Week, after the event was held in Sao Paulo. Restaurant Week will be held in Sao Paulo again, starting August 31st, and Recife and Brasilia will have their own editions in the coming months.

Rio’s Restaurant Week began on Monday and runs through May 24th. The sixty participating restaurants will offer R$25 lunches and/or R$39 dinners. Also, Rio’s edition will charge an extra R$1 for dinner, and the proceeds from the extra real will benefit Projeto UERÊ.

The list of restaurants are available here. Make sure you look at the restaurant websites and menus to be sure you’re getting a good deal, since some of the restaurants are fairly low key lunch joints.

Also, Sao Paulo’s Restaurant Week already has a preview of restaurants for their winter edition of the event. Check it out here.

Today, we’re going to return to our “Off the Beaten Path” series to discuss less known tourist attractions in Brazil. We’re going to look at Serra da Capivara National Park, located in the northeastern state of Piauí.

An UNESCO World Heritage site, the park is home to cave paintings dated up to 25,000 years old, evidence of one of the oldest civilizations in South America. The park encompasses 319,000 acres, and features not only the paintings, but also the Pedra Furada, numerous hiking trails, rappeling and rock climbing.

Niede Guidon is the park’s head archeologist, who also runs the Museum of the American Man, located in the park. The park is thought to have been home to one of the largest farming communities in prehistoric Latin America.

The park is currently struggling with financial issues, so it is hoping to expand tourism in the area to attract much-needed funding.
