This past week, the first annual Rio Summer Event was held in Brazil, attracting fashion moguls like Valentino, supermodels, and socialites alike to Brazil’s favorite seaside city to check out Brazil’s latest summer fashions.

Today we’re going to look at the many changes Brazilian currency has undergone throughout history. To understand the difference in value of each currency, see here. Until recently, the Brazilian economy was quite unstable and inflation was often quite high, and as a result the currency changed many times. You’ll note that some of the currencies were used for less than a year!

  • Réis: used during the Portuguese empire and the new Republic, until 1942
  • Cruzeiro: used from 1942-1967
  • Cruzeiro novo: used from 1967-1970
  • Cruzeiro: used again from 1970-1986
  • Cruzado: used from 1986-1989
  • Cruzado novo: used from 1989-1990
  • Cruzeiro: used yet again from 1990-1993
  • Cruzeiro real: used from 1993-1994
  • Real: began use in 1994, still used today

Musician and author Charles Gavin picked the top fifteen Brazilian albums for a Globo music special, choosing the albums he considers “essential” to understanding and appreciating Brazilian music. The list encompasses various genres, including rock and samba. You can listen to samples from the fifteen albums here. Let’s take a look at the list:

Though the most popular sport in Brazil is obviously soccer, today we’re going to take a look at how to say the names of different sports that are played or popular in Brazil.

futebol: soccer [foo-chee-BOH]

volei: volleyball [VOH-lay]

volei de praia: beach volleyball [VOH-lay deh PRY-ah]

basquete: basketball [bahs-KEH-chee]

futsal: indoor soccer [foo-chee-SOW]

jiu jitsu: jujutsu (martial art) [jzoo-JITZ-oo]

futebol americano: American football [foo-chee-BOH ah-meh-ree-CAHN-oo]

Formula 1: car racing [FOUR-moo-lah oom]

Well, not exactly, but the Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Estética (the Brazilian Society of Asthetic Medicine) will offer free plastic surgery and beauty treatments in Rio de Janeiro from November 10th to November 19th, though only two hundred patients per day will be treated. Patients must prove that they have an income less than R$500 (US$250) per month and bring government-issued ID, and they will be eligible to receive free treatments including:

  • laser treatment for skin
  • chemical peels
  • botulinim toxin
  • varicose vein treatment
  • ultrasound
  • skin treatments
  • nutritional advice
  • cellulite treatment
