Hi Pi!
I've never been to Kraków (is it even legal for a Pole to admit something like that?) but from what you're saying I don't know if I really want to. I had an iced coffee drink which cost me 12PLN - that's about US$4! Yeek! And yet the place was crowded with people, mostly Poles. How can they afford it?

Westy!
Next time you go to a fancy conference with a banquet and stuff in Gdańsk, I'm coming with you! I'll even wear stilettos! ;)

isabella,
I really couldn't find it. But I found one in Wrzeszcz on the big main street, two (or maybe one) tram stops from Jaśkowa Dolina going to Gdańsk Główny.

Al,
next time I really want to go to Kartuzy. :)

Expateek,
hmmm... I actually brought a pair of sneakers with me. They were nice sneakers, too. Very pink and very classy. My friend took one look at them and said "You're not going to wear THAT." And it was a statement, not a question... So I stuck to hiking books.

I haven't visited Gdańsk yet and it's a major source of regret. I'm with the tourist office lady though: Kazimierz in Kraków is full of investment properties owned by foreigners. I think the area around the Rynek is worse. Oh and cappuccino in Nowa Prowincja (favourite student haunt) has risen from 6.50PLN to 8PLN since I left in June. That makes it about 2 British pounds in total. A small cappuccino in Starbucks over here costs £1.75...

I first visited Gdańsk in September 2005 for a technical conference

I returned for a second conference in May 2006, a third in September 2006, a fourth in May 2007, a fifth in May 2008 -- I guess you could say that I'm hooked on Gdańsk or at least conferences in Gdańsk that have banquets and receptions in places such as the Dwór Artusa w Stare Miasto w Gdańsku (Arthurs Court in the Old Town of Gdansk)

Gdańsk was so welcoming and pleasant that I stopped-in for a couple of days before spending 3 days in Hel and then 2 more days in Gdańsk all as part of a family vacation that zipped through Poland from Zakopane to Gdańsk via Kraków and Warszawa in a bit less than 2 weeks in August of 2007

I'd recommend it to all! – on fact I’d recommend all of Poland that I’ve been able to visit in the past few years!

Westy

PS: your Blog is great! I wish my knowledge of the language was better -- my best Polish line is ne moje dobrze po polsku

My sentiments, exactly!
During my latest visit (2004), the old Gdansk seemed a bit tired and overly commercialized. But we found the people very friendly.

BTW - I found an online mention of Bar Mleczny Neptun, ul.Dluga 33/34, Gdansk from 2005 - maybe it's been replaced by one of those "dull and overpriced restaurants" since then :-(

(Cmentarz instead of szpital? I'm afraid to ask, what the heck where you thinking? ;-))
