"Guga" tenta obter sua primeira vitória nos E.U.A.
No fim de semana de 1 de abril, o brasileiro Gustavo Kuerten, 23 anos, venceu a
estrela do tênis Andre Agassi, e chegou às finais do Ericsson Open. Kuerten,
chamado carinhosamente de "Guga" pelos seus fãs, enfrentou firmemente Agassi
em meio à alegre e barulhenta torcida brasileira. Ele perdeu para Pete Sampras na
extenuante competição final.
Assessor do presidente haitiano é assassinado a tiros
Assessor presidencial, jornalista e dono de estação de rádio, Jean Leopold
Dominique foi baleado várias vezes numa rua movimentada de Port-au-Prince, no
dia 3 de abril, quando ia para o trabalho. O segurança que trabalhava no prédio
também foi baleado e assassinado. Especula-se que o assassinato tenha origem
política, devido às tensões originadas pela presidência de René Preval, que
governa por decreto desde janeiro de 1999. Nas ruas de Port-au-Prince há
protestos diários contra a demora do governo em convocar eleições.
Uma nova reviravolta na política peruana
As eleições presidenciais no Peru irão criar controvérsias quando o atual
presidente Alberto Fujimori tentar vencer sua terceira eleição. Mas ele tem um
novo adversário pela frente: o indígena Alejandro Toledo começou uma acalorada
campanha endereçada ao povo peruano e seu orgulho nacional sobre suas raízes e
heranças. O próprio Toledo vem de uma família pobre e trabalhou como
engraxate quando garoto. Ele acabou ganhando uma bolsa para estudar na
Universidade de Stanford, Estados Unidos e é atualmente considerado o principal
adversário de Fujimori na corrida presidencial.
Fusão no Brasil causa especulação
Depois da ação judicial contra a Microsoft, culpada de violar a legislação
antitruste americana, em caso recentemente levado ao Tribunal Supremo dos
E.U.A., aprendemos que todo cuidado é pouco quando se lida com fusões e
aquisições. Embora o governo brasileiro tenha aprovado a fusão das duas maiores
cervejarias do país, os defensores das leis antitruste estão reclamando que esta
fusão pode ser nociva para a já frágil economia brasileira. As duas companhias,
Cia. Cervejaria Brahma e Cia. Antarctica Paulista, irão controlar 72 por cento do
mercado nacional agora que se uniram na Cia. de Bebidas das Américas. O
governo aprovou a fusão baseado na seguinte declaração de Hebe Romano: "Não
há fatos concretos que indiquem que a fusão irá prejudicar o mercado".
O novo presidente da OPEP busca uma solução
O venezuelano Ali Rodirguez, o novo presidente da OPEP, declarou que o cartel
tentará
manter o limite de preço de um barril de petróleo entre US$ 22 e US$ 25. A
proposta de manter uma faixa fixa de preço para o petróleo foi proposta pelos
venezuelanos no encontro da OPEP no fim de março. Rodriguez também declarou
que a Venezuela planeja aumentar sua própria produção de petróleo para tentar
compensar o aumento recente nos preços do petróleo.

Guga Goes for His First US Victory
On the weekend of April 1st, 23 year-old Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten beat tennis
all-star Andre Agassi to advance to the final round of the Ericsson Open. Kuerten,
affectionately known to his fans as "Guga," played a solid game against Agassi
amidst the background noise of his vocal Brazilian fans. He lost to Pete Sampras
in a grueling match in the finals.
Haitian Presidential Advisor Shot to Death
Presidential advisor, radio station owner and journalist, Jean Leopold Dominique,
was shot several times on a busy street in Port-au-Prince while he was on his way
to work on April 3rd. The security guard who was working at the building was
also shot and killed. It is speculated that the murders were politically motivated,
caused by tensions stemming from the presidency of Rene Preval, who has ruled
by decree since January 1999. It is reported that there are daily protests in the
streets of Port-au-Prince because of the government’s failure to hold elections.
A New Twist in Peruvian Politics
The presidential elections in Peru are already set to be controversial as sitting
president Alberto Fujimori attempts to win his third election. But he has a new
contender to face: Native American Alejandro Toledo has begun a heated
campaign aimed at the Peruvian people and their national pride in their roots and
heritage. Toledo himself grew up in poverty and worked as a shoeshine boy. He
eventually won a writing scholarship to study at Stanford University in the United
States. He is now considered to be Fujimori’s main opponent in the presidential
race.
Brazilian Merger Causes Speculation
In light of the recent case brought to the Supreme Court regarding the Microsoft
Antitrust suit, we have learned that caution pays when dealing with mergers and
acquisitions. Although the Brazilian government has approved the merger of the
country’s two largest breweries, antitrust advocates are claiming that it could be
detrimental to the already fragile economy. The two companies, Cia. Cervejaria
Brahma and Cia. Antarctica Paulista, will maintain 72 percent of the national
market now that they have merged into Cia. de Bebidas das Americas. The
regulators approved the merger based on the following statement made by Hebe
Romano, "There are no concrete facts that the merger would harm the market."
OPEC’s New President Looks for a Solution
Venezuelan Ali Rodriguez, the new president of OPEC, has stated that the cartel
will attempt to maintain the price range for a barrel of crude oil between US$22
and US$28. The proposal to maintain a fixed price band for oil was proposed by
the Venezuelans at the OPEC meeting at the end of March. Rodriguez also stated
that Venezuela plans to increase its own oil production to try to offset the recent
increase in oil prices.
