the Internet newsletter from Transparent Language. In
this issue, we focus on a topic of universal interest:
entertainment and entertainers. Across the globe,
people look for new ways to enjoy free time with
family and friends, and often discussing the glamorous
lives of film stars, musicians, and celebrities
becomes entertainment itself. If you've been
interested in learning about French entertainers but
don't know where to start, read on. This month we
attempt to fill you in. I think you'll find this
month's article fun, as well as effective in building
your language skills.

Si l'on vous demandait de citer des artistes français,
les noms qui vous viendraient à l'esprit seraient
Catherine Deneuve et Gérard Depardieu, car vous les
avez vus jouer dans des films sortis aux Etats-Unis et
vous avez lu des articles les concernant dans "People"
ou dans d'autres revues.
D'autres artistes français ont, pour la plupart, un
point commun: la difficulté de se faire connaître de
ce côté-ci de l'Atlantique. Pourtant, bon nombre
d'entre eux, appartenant à une nouvelle génération de
comédiens ou de chanteurs, sont pleins de talent et
tentent actuellement de s'établir dans l'industrie du
spectacle aux Etats-Unis.
Vanessa Paradis a commencé sa carrière de comédienne à
l'âge de sept ans, son premier « Tube » est sorti en
1986 alors qu'elle n'avait que 14 ans. En 1991 Vanessa
se lance dans une nouvelle direction, elle signe un
contrat avec Chanel pour la promotion du fameux parfum
Coco. En 1992, Vanessa vient aux Etats Unis, y parfait
son anglais et produit son troisième album à New York,
en collaboration avec Lenny Kravitz. Toujours actrice
aussi bien que chanteuse, Vanessa apparaît dans son
premier film « Noce Blanche », sorti en 1989. En 1995
on la voit dans « Elisa », avec Gérard Depardieu, puis
dans son troisième film « Un amour de sorcière » en
1997. Mais devinez où vit Vanessa? Ici même, aux Etats
Unis, à Manhattan, New York, où elle est peut-être
mieux connue à cause de sa liaison avec l'acteur
Johnny Depp. Ils ont eu un enfant l'année dernière.
Pascal Obispo. Qui ? pourriez-vous demander. Né en
1965, Pascal monte son premier groupe « Senzo » en
1988. Depuis, il n'a pas arrêté de faire parler de
lui, produisant album après album, ouvrant le concert
de Céline Dion au stade Bercy à Paris en 1996 et
obtenant son premier Disque de Platine en 1998 pour
« Superflu », avec plus d'un million de ventes. En mai
1998 Pascal Obispo produit son premier enregistrement
public sur CD et en vidéo lors de son concert « Obispo
Live 98 ». Depuis 1991 il a réalisé plusieurs titres
en collaboration avec un autre artiste de talent,
Florent Pagny. Leurs trois premières chansons de 1999,
se sont vendues en nombres toujours plus grands, à
savoir 200.000, 500.000 et plus de 1,5 millions
d'exemplaires. Le dernier album de Pascal est sorti en
décembre 1999.
Tournons-nous maintenant vers le théâtre et le cinéma.
Tout le monde a entendu parler des Césars qui sont
attribués en grande pompe chaque année à Cannes. Mais
connaissez-vous Anne Brochet? En 1999, elle a obtenu
le César du meilleur espoir féminin. Elle est
extrêmement talentueuse et tous les réalisateurs se
l'arrachent. Un autre jeune talent, Vincent Elbaz, se
trouve lui aussi sur le seuil d'une fantastique
carrière au cinéma après s'être fait remarquer,
notamment, dans le film «La vérité si je mens»
(1997).
Il y a déjà deux ans, la comédie musicale "Notre Dame
de Paris" devint l'un des grands succès du 20ème
siècle. Ce spectacle a mis en vedette quelques
nouveaux jeunes talents : la chanteuse israélienne
Noa, le Corse, Patrick Fiori, Hélène Segera (dans le
rôle d'Esméralda) pour ne citer qu'eux. Dans le rôle
de Quasimodo Bruno Pelletier et Garou, deux talentueux
acteurs venus du Canada, se sont imposés. Peut-être
avez-vous entendu parler d'eux? Sinon, vous risquez
de le faire bientôt. Depuis la comédie musicale a
débuté à Londres et est passée par Toronto avant
d'arriver à Las Vegas en janvier 2000.
Malheureusement, il faudrait plusieurs heures
uniquement pour citer les noms des artistes qui
appartiennent à cette nouvelle génération. Nous
espérons que cette lettre vous donnera envie d'en
savoir un peu plus sur les talents français. Promenez-
vous sur l'Internet sur des sites tels que
www.fr.yahoo.com pour écouter certaines de leurs
chansons en attendant de pouvoir les voir sur nos
écrans et les écouter sur les chaînes de radio... ici,
aux Etats Unis... Bon amusement !

If someone asked you to name some French entertainers,
the names that would come to mind probably would
include Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu, since
you've seen them in films in the United States and
read articles about them in "People" or other
magazines.
Most other French entertainers have at least one thing
in common: the difficulty they've encountered in
making a name for themselves on this side of the
Atlantic. However, many of them, part of a new
generation of actors and singers, are very talented
and are now attempting to find a niche in the American
entertainment industry.
Vanessa Paradis started her acting career at the age
of 7; her first hit song came out in 1986 when she was
only 14. In 1991, Vanessa struck out in a new
direction, signing a contract with Chanel to promote
the famed Coco perfume. Vanessa came to the United
States in 1992, perfected her English and produced her
third album in New York, working with Lenny Kravitz.
Still an actress as well as a singer, her first film,
"White Wedding," came out in 1989. In 1995, she
appeared in "Elisa," which starred Gérard Depardieu,
followed by her third film, "Witch Way Love" in 1997.
And guess where Vanessa now lives. Here in the United
States-- in Manhattan-- where she is perhaps best
known for her relationship with actor Johnny Depp. The
two had a baby together last year.
Then there's Pascal Obispo. Who? You might ask.
Pascal, born in 1965, started his first band, "Senzo,"
in 1988. Since then he has made himself known,
producing album after album, opening for Céline Dion's
concert at Bercy Stadium in Paris in 1996 and
achieving his first platinum record in 1998 with
"Superflu," which sold a million copies. In May 1998,
Pascal Obispo produced his first live recording, a CD
and video made during his "Obispo Live 98" concert.
Since 1991, he has also created numerous records in
partnership with another talented artist, Florent
Pagny. Their first three songs of 1999 sold in ever-
increasing numbers: 200,000 then 500,000 then 1.5
million copies! Pascal brought out his latest album in
December 1999.
Now let's look at the theater and the cinema. Everyone
knows about the "César" awards, given out with great
ceremony every year in Cannes. But do you know Anne
Brochet? She won the 1999 César for Most Promising
Actress. Anne is very talented and filmmakers are
fighting to work with her. Another young talent,
Vincent Elbaz, is also on the verge of a great film
career, particularly after the push he got for films
such as "Would I Lie to You" (1997).
Two years ago, the musical comedy "Notre Dame de
Paris" became one of the great success stories of the
20th century. This show spotlighted some new young
talents: the Israeli singer Noa, Corsican Patrick
Fiori and Hélène Segera (who played the role of
Esmerelda) to name only a few. In the role of
Quasimodo, two talented young actors from Canada
stepped up: Bruco Pelletier and Garou. Perhaps you've
even heard of them? If not, you may soon. The musical
has since opened in London and stopped in Toronto
before opening in Las Vegas this January.
Unfortunately, it would take too long just to name all
the artists who make up this new generation of French
entertainers. We hope that this newsletter will
encourage you to learn more about French performers.
