As we approach the year 2000, many questions arise around the issues of Y2K, as well as
cultural and religious responses to the new millennium. Here at Transparent Language, Inc.
we thought this would be a good opportunity for you to look at a contemporary topic and
how France is managing it. Included below is information on some interesting Y2K issues in
France such as how computer users view possible problems and how people can celebrate the
arrival of this special year.

Partout dans le monde, l'industrie redoute l'arrivée de l'an 2000, mais un groupe
français a une bonne raison de se réjouir: les producteurs de champagne. Les fabricants
de ce vin raffiné destiné à la célébration devraient avoir la bannière de l'année
grâce à ceux voulant surpasser la célébration de la prochaine Nouvelle Année.
Il se peut que le reste de l'industrie française n'apprécie pas autant la nouvelle
année. Le gouvernement français a récemment pris l'initiative de s'attaquer aux
problèmes de l'an 2000 en créant un Comité National pour le passage à l'An 2000 afin
de superviser l'effort. Pendant que, à haut niveau, les officiels sont très inquiets à
propos de problèmes possibles, une récente enquête montre que la plupart des citoyens
français pensent que les rapports sur l'An 2000 sont très exagérés. Bien que les
petites entreprises françaises puissent être particulièrement vulnérables, seulement
29% d'entre elles disent prendre le problème sérieusement.
Il se peut que la France ne soit pas complètement préparée pour les virus
informatiques de l'An 2000, mais cela ne sera pas à l'encontre de la célébration de
l'année 2000. Par chance, tous les problèmes liés à l'An 2000 seront résolus avant la
fin du millénaire, puisque les festivités sont sensées durer deux ans.
A Paris, de nombreux événements sont concentrés sur l'heure. Sur la Tour Eiffel, une
horloge digitale fait le compte à rebours jusqu'au 1er janvier 2000, depuis 1997. Le 31
décembre, l'horloge décomptera les heures et les minutes jusqu'à minuit.
Un décompte du temps un peu moins moderne est installé Place de la Concorde, avec le
fameux obélisque dont la pointe servira de cadran solaire dès septembre. De plus, la
grande roue de la Place de la Concorde sera transformée en horloge au premier coup de
minuit pendant le Réveillon de l'An.
Pour ceux qui trouvent que carillonner le millénaire à Paris est quelque peu
étouffant, Avignon offre une alternative. Représentant la France parmi les neuf Villes
Européennes de la Culture en l'An 2000, Avignon offrira des spectacles spéciaux ainsi
qu'une version hivernale du fameux Festival Théâtral d'Avignon.
Dans tous les cas, ce n'est qu'une question de temps avant que tous ceux qui feront la
fête partout en France soient prêts à s'écrier, "Vive l'An 2000".

Industry around the world fears the coming of the year 2000, but one French group has
reason to cheer-- Champagne producers. Makers of the quintessential celebration wine
should have a banner year as people seek to make this year's New Year's celebration stand
out.
Other French industry may not enjoy the new year so much. The French government has
recently made a push to tackle Y2K problems, creating a national committee to supervise
the effort (the Comité national pour le passage à l'an 2000). While high-level officials
are very concerned about possible problems, a recent survey shows that most French
citizens think that reports on Y2K are exaggerated. Small businesses in France may be
particularly vulnerable, since only 29% of them claim to take the problem seriously.
France may not be fully prepared for Y2K computer bugs, but that is not going to stand
in the way of celebrations of the year 2000. Hopefully, all Y2K problems will be resolved
by the time the millennium celebrations end, since festivities are scheduled to last two
years.
In Paris, many special events are centered on time. A digital sign on the Eiffel Tower
has been counting down the days to January 1, 2000 since 1997. On December 31, the clock
will count down the hours and minutes to midnight.
A less modern time display is planned for the Place de la Concorde, whose famed obelisk
will become the pointer of a sundial starting in September. In addition, the Ferris wheel
at the Place de la Concorde will be transformed into a clock at the stroke of midnight on
New Year's Eve.
For those who find the idea of ringing in the millennium in Paris somewhat
overwhelming, Avignon offers an alternative. France's representative among the nine
European Cultural Cities of the Year 2000 (Villes européennes de la culture en l'an
2000), Avignon will feature special exhibits and a winter version of the famous Avignon
Festival of Theater.
In any case, it is only a matter of time before celebrants throughout France are ready
to proclaim, "Vive l'an 2000!"
