Read Italian Language and Culture Articles

Dear Language Enthusiast,

Welcome to the Italian Monthly, the Internet newsletter from Transparent Language. In this issue, we focus on one of today’s most important issues: the environment. As we move into the new millennium, the impact of modern society on the environment is a key concern in Italy, as in countries around the world. Examining how the people of Italy view and address this critical issue offers fascinating insights into the culture, and its connection to Italy’s unique environment. I think you’ll find this month’s article thought provoking, as well as effective in building your language skills.

Sincerely,
Transparent Language

In Italiano:

In English:

This summer has proved to be a hot one in Italy, and I'm not talking about the climate. Italy and her European neighbors have suffered from a rash of forest fires not unlike those in the midwestern United States.

Areas particularly hard hit were Puglia, Calabria, and Basilicata, regions in the southern tip of the country. At least one person - an elderly man - died in Calabria. Another elderly man died in a fire on the island of Sardinia when he tried to save his sheep from the blazes that ravaged the forests there. Farther North, fires have blazed through the forest of Castelfusano in Ostia, near Rome. Firefighters made every effort to contain and extinguish the flames, but hot weather and strong winds fed the flames, making the battle particularly difficult.

As if the destruction of forests and underbrush weren’t devasating enough, officials suspect that at least some of the fires resulted from arson. Evidence suggests that the fire in Ostia, which left at least 15 people hospitalized, was definitely an act of malice. Firefighters discovered basins of flammable liquids among the burnt trees. Fire officials were further convinced of a malicious act when they were called to Castelfusano to fight a second battle with the flames after extinguishing the blaze once. Pecoraro Scanio, the Agricultural Minister, has vowed to take a hard line against arsonists. In several statements issued this summer, he has revealed intentions to increase the length of prison terms assigned to arsonists, to hold them behind bars from four to ten years if convicted.

Musicians have taken the devastation of Italy’s natural landscape seriously, and planned a concert to fund reforestation in Ostia on September 8. They hope to replenish some of the many acres of forest lost to fires set intentionally and malevolently.
