I Profughi Kosovari Mandati a Casa

Kosovar Refugees Sent Home
As of July 20th, Italy has put an end to the period of indemnity for Kosovar refugees which was declared in March of this year. All new arrivals from Albania or other countries will be immediately sent back to their countries of origin. This news especially worries gypsy communities, who are accused by the Albanians of having collaborated with the Serbs during the conflict. Groups of gypsies are still arriving in hordes on the Adriatic coasts, fleeing the persecution of the Albanians who have recently returned home. From now on, all those who arrive in Italy will be repatriated.

Italy welcomed some immigrants during the conflict in Kosovo, when approximately 800,000 Albanians fled the Serb province. Many of these Albanians arrived in Italy, by both land and sea, and now many of them are trying to return home. Their repatriation is often difficult, due to some bands of criminals who are robbing many of those trying to return. There have been several reports of episodes of violence and extortion against refugees who simply want to begin reconstructing their lives.

An Appeal from the Royal Family
From Paris comes another interesting piece of news this month, concerning Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, the son of the last king of Italy, who has been exiled to France for more than fifty years. He declared his intention to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights against a law that, since 1948, impedes male descendants of the House of Savoy from entering Italy. The law was passed two years after the abolition of the monarchy, in part as a punishment against the Savoy family for their support of the fascist leader Benito Mussolini. Now Vittorio Emanuele would like to return to the country in which he was born, but he will be able to do so only if the parliament votes to change the constitutional law. He hopes that the European Court of Human Rights will help him to pressure the government to this end.

Dante's Ashes Found in a Library
In Florence a sack containing ashes taken from the tomb of Dante Alighieri was found. The ashes had been lost by Florentine librarians while they were presenting them at a world congress of librarians seventy years ago. The ashes were found by a group of workers while they were reorganizing the shelves of the library. A notarized document was also found which explained the contents of the sack. Dante died in 1321, shortly after having finished writing "Il Paradiso," the last book of the Divine Comedy. The ashes had been taken from his grave in 1865 during a celebration that commemorated the six hundredth anniversary of his birth.

A Victory for the National Volleyball Team
The players of the Italian national volleyball team have become world champions after triumphing in the World League. In the final game, a game brimming with intensity and tension, they defeated Cuba, the defending champion. The World League games were played in Mar del Plata, in Argentina. The victory was celebrated all over Italy, where volleyball is one of the most popular sports.

Schumacher's Recovery
In other sports news, Michael Shumacher, the Formula 1 racecar driver for Ferrari, broke his leg in two places during the British Gran Prix, when he slammed his car into a wall. He was going more than one hundred miles per hour. A similar accident cost Brasilian driver Ayrton Senna his life in 1994. It will be at least three months before Shumacher, loved in all of Italy for his victories with Ferrari, will be able to compete again.
