Greetings from Transparent Language! Every so often we send out this free newsletter with topics of interest to Spanish language enthusiasts. The first half is in Spanish followed by the English translation. We hope this helps you with your Spanish language learning.

Here in New Hampshire the flowers are blooming and spring seems to be upon us. As warm weather approaches, traveling has been on our minds, and so we have chosen travel tips as the topic for this newsletter. Included below are hints about festivals in the Spanish-speaking world, from Pamplona, Spain to Taboga, Panam?

¡No se lo pierda!

En San José, la capital de Costa Rica, se va a celebrar del 24 de julio al 15 de agosto el Festival Anual de Música Internacional. El programa consiste en conjuntos clásicos, orquestas, compositores y solistas de todas las partes del mundo. ¡Tales representaciones incluyen entre otras a la Orquesta de Cámara húngara Virtuosi, Quitango (un conjunto de cámara de tangos) y los violinistas Miklos Szenthely y Jörg Assmann! Hasta este momento, las únicas fechas fijas de los conciertos son las siguientes: "Conciertos de Gala" ubicados en el Teatro Nacional de la Opera, consisten en diez conciertos que tendrán lugar del 6 al 15 de agosto y "Música junto al Mar" ubicado en el Hotel y Anfiteatro Villa Calatas, consiste en cuatro conciertos que tendrán lugar el 24 y el 31 de julio y el 1 y 7 de agosto.

El Festival de San Fermín, en Pamplona, España tiene lugar cada año del 6 al 14 de julio. Aunque se celebran muchos otros eventos durante estos días, el Encierro de los Toros es el más famoso de todos. Aquí le damos algunos consejos prácticos para elegir asientos y comprar boletos para mirar el Encierro de los Toros. Hay dos secciones para los espectadores: "la sombra" y "el sol". "La sombra", como indica su nombre, está a la sombra y es una sección sosegada. Los boletos para esta sección son mucho más caros. La gente que se sienta aquí está por lo general interesada en mirar el paso de los toros, y no en participar en los festejos. "El sol", como indica su nombre, es completamente lo opuesto a "la sombra". Es aquí donde la muchedumbre demuestra su entusiasmo en voz muy alta. Es muy difícil conseguir boletos para cada una de las secciones debido a la popularidad del evento. Se venden los boletos por adelantado y los patrones avezados al evento reservan muchos permanentemente. ¡Prepárese, si Ud. se decide a hacer cola para comprar un boleto! Las colas están usualmente atascadas de gente que compra varios boletos y los revende a un precio más caro a las otras personas que están esperando en la cola. A causa de esto, se acaban los boletos rápidamente, a menudo antes de que la cola sea más corta. ¡Recuerde que en Pamplona se hablan español y vascuence (la lengua del país vasco)!

Se celebra la Cueca, la danza nacional de Chile, en el Festival de Danza Folklórica en el Valle de Azapa, cerca de Arica. El baile, en el que las parejas bailan cara a cara, dan vueltas en círculos y las mujeres agitan los pañuelos, es totalmente único en Latinoamérica. La guitarra provee el acompañamiento instrumental de la danza y también usualmente se acompaña con música de arpa, piano o acordeón.

El pueblo de Los Caneyes que se encuentra en Patanemo, Venezuela, celebrará la fiesta de la Eucaristía para observar el Corpus Christi, con el tradicional Festival de los Diablos Danzantes. Las rigurosas danzas, que se bailan por todas las calles del pueblo y durante las cuales se visita cada casa, significan la representación de las diferencias entre el bien y el mal. Se considera una manera de limpiar el pueblo de los malos espíritus. Esta vibrante celebración venezolana tiene lugar a principios de junio.

Aunque siempre se siente la presencia del Merengue, que es la danza nacional, no se pierda en la República Dominicana el Festival de Merengue de Santo Domingo durante la tercera semana de julio. Durante esta época bandas de Merengue de talento van a actuar en todos los lugares locales.

A poca distancia de la costa de la Ciudad de Panamá, Panamá, la isla de Taboga celebra su festival anual el 16 de julio. El Festival de la Virgen del Carmen tiene lugar en las aguas que rodean la isla. Un bote lleno de flores y una estatua de la Virgen del Carmen, al que siguen miles de barcas llenas de juerguistas, encabeza una procesión náutica alrededor de la isla.

In San José, Costa Rica, the annual International Music Festival willbe held from July 24th through August 15th. The series consists of classical ensembles, orchestras, composers and soloists from around the world. Such performances include the Hungarian Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, Quitango (a chamber tango ensemble) and violinists Miklos Szenthely and Jörg Assmann, among many others! Thus far, the only fixed dates for concerts are the following: "Gala Concerts" located in the National Theater Opera House, which consists of ten concerts from August 6th to August 15th and "Music by the Sea" located in the Hotel and Amphitheater Villa Calatas, which consists of four concerts on July 24th and 31st and August 1st and 7th.

The Festival of San Fermín, in Pamplona, Spain, takes place each year from July 6th to July 14th. Although there are many other events celebrated during this time, the Running of the Bulls is by far the most famous. Here are some tips about how to choose seats and acquire tickets to watch the Running of the Bulls! There are two sections for spectators: "the shade" and "the sun". "The shade," as the name indicates, is in the shade and it is a quiet section. The tickets for this section are much more expensive. The people who sit here are usually interested in watching the bulls, not participating in the festivities. "The sun," as the name indicates, is quite the opposite of "the shade". This is where the crowd is loudly enthusiastic. It is very difficult to obtain tickets for either section because of the popularity of the event. The tickets are sold in advance and many of them are reserved permanently by seasoned patrons of the event. If you decide to wait in line for a ticket, be prepared! The lines are usually clogged with people who buy several tickets and sell them at a more expensive price to the others waiting. Because of this, tickets run out quickly, often before the line has diminished. Remember that in Pamplona the residents speak Spanish and Euskara (the language of the Basque country)!

The national dance of Chile, Cueca, is celebrated at the Folk Dance Festival in the Valley of Azapa, near Arica. The dancers perform face to face, turn in circles and women wave their scarves. It is quite unique in Latin America. The accompanying music consists of guitar playing and is usually accompanied by harp, piano or accordion. This event will take place in June.

The village of Los Caneyes in Patanemo, Venezuela will be holding the celebration of the Eucharist in observance of Corpus Christi, with the traditional Dancing Devils Festival. The rigorous dances which are performed throughout the streets of the village and visit each house, are meant to represent the differences between good and evil. It is seen as a way to cleanse the village from evil spirits. This vibrant Venezuelan celebration takes place in early June.

In the Dominican Republic, although the presence of the national dance called Merengue is always felt, don't miss the Santo Domingo Merengue Festival during the third week of July. During this time there will be talented Merengue bands performing in all the local venues!

Off the shores of Panama City, Panama, the island of Taboga has its annual festival on July 16th. The Festival of the Virgin of Carmen takes place in the waters surrounding the island. A nautical procession around the island is led by a boat filled with flowers and a statue of the Virgin of Carmen, followed by thousands of boats full of revelers!
