Norwegian is the language of Norway. Like the other Scandinavian languages, it belongs to the Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family. Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish are generally mutually intelligible, reflecting both their close linguistic relationship and the complicated history shared by their three nations: Norway, Sweden, and Denmark were all joined in the Kalmar Union in 1397, and even after Sweden broke away, Norway remained under Danish control until 1814. After they split apart, Norway came under the rule of the Swedish crown until 1905, when the country regained its independent status. With independence came a movement to officially distinguish the Norwegian language from that of its neighbors, particularly Danish.
