L'estate in Italia è sinonimo di vacanze, festival e tempo passato con la famiglia e amici. L'autunno, invece, si riserva il piacere di scambiare le storie di avventure ed eventi estivi con compagni di scuola e colleghi. L'estate porta una grande varietà di celebrazioni e festival in tutta Italia, alcuni centrati sull'arte in genere. Come anche negli Stati Uniti, il divertimento in Italia è diversificato dagli spettacoli di ragazze in show televisivi all'opera di Verdi a La Scala.

Nei mesi di giugno e luglio si celebra a Spoleto il Festival dei due Mondi. Uno spettacolo di teatro, ballo, film e musica (i concerti includono musica classica, operetta e jazz) diretto dal compositore Giancarlo Menotti, vincitore del Premio Pulitzer. Questo spettacolo è stato pensato per avvicinare le idee artistiche esistenti tra gli Stati Uniti e l'Europa.

Una tipica tradizione estiva si svolge in Toscana nella città di Siena, una delle poche città medioevali esistenti ancora racchiusa entro le proprie mura. Una delle più brutali ma eccitanti corse a cavallo senza sella, il Palio, si tiene due volte all'anno nella piazza centrale di Siena chiamata Il Campo. I fantini vengono scelti tra i diciassette settori o contrade della città dove si svolgono elaborate preparazioni nei giorni che precedono la corsa. Solo un minuto e mezzo sono necessari, in genere, ai cavalli per percorrere i tre giri del Campo in ciascuna batteria! Ma non lasciatevi ingannare dalla brevità della corsa; il Palio è una competizione rigorosa e a volte anche violenta: non è fuori dal comune assistere a fantini e cavalli ferirsi o anche morire nella piazza con i muri coperti da materassi. L'evento prende il nome dalla bandiera, o Palio, che viene consegnata al fantino come premio vincente alla fine della corsa.

Con una nota più leggera, vogliamo ricordare l'Ericsson Summer Festival nella vicina città toscana di Lucca, dove vengono ospitati una serie di cantanti quali Joe Cocker, Ray Charles, Alanis Morissette, The Cranberries, Joan Baez, Natalie Cole, Lionel Richie & Giorgia, Oscar D'Leon e Youssou N'Dour.

Uno dei più prestigiosi ed eccitanti festival dell'opera in Italia viene tenuto all'Arena di Verona, un anfiteatro romano ancora intatto esistente. Quest'anno si è disputata la 78ª edizione del festival annuale celebrando Verdi e le sue opere, il Nabucco, La Traviata, La Forza del Destino e l'Aida. Le opere vengono rappresentate con una rappresentazione teatrale ad alto livello all'aperto sotto il cielo estivo. Il festival si tiene ogni estate dalla fine di giugno all'inizio di settembre.

In Italia, come anche negli Stati Uniti, le celebrità del mondo dello spettacolo sono al centro dei pettegolezzi che raggiungono anche il mondo dell'opera. Nel 1996, Luciano Pavarotti, il leggendario tenore, era al culmine dei pettegolezzi mondani quando alcune fotografie della sua scappatella ai Caraibi con Nicoletta Mantovani (la sua segretaria e meno di metà dei suoi anni) furono pubblicate. Questo scandalo risultò nella rottura del matrimonio di trentacinque anni. Ancora più di recente, il tenore Andrea Bocelli ha attratto l'attenzione pubblica per il suo sex appeal e per la sua voce (anche se Bocelli appare più famoso negli Stati Uniti che in Italia).

Comunque, gli artisti di musica classica non sono gli unici ad essere presi di mira dai pettegolezzi; come agli americani anche agli italiani piace sapere tutto di tutti, specialmente sui personaggi celebri. Basta dare un'occhiata al canale gossip del www.jumpy.it per notare quali siano gli argomenti ritenuti più interessanti. Secondo jumpy gli argomenti più scottanti oggigiorno sono:

1. La rottura del rapporto tra la modella italiana Anna Falchi e il campione motociclistico Max Biaggi e la seguente relazione con il calciatore Pippo Inzaghi.
   
   
2. Il misterioso legame tra l'attrice Elisabetta Gardini e l'attore Lorenzo Amato durante il festival di Isben di tre giorni sulla costa amalfitana, malgrado la presenza del fidanzato della Gardini, il regista Ferdinando Balestra.
   
   
3. L'introduzione della ragazza di Leonardo DiCaprio, Gisele Bundchen, alla madre.
   
   

Se queste informazioni sono prese alla leggera dalla stampa, basta dare uno sguardo all'arte italiana della passeggiata del dopo cena per rendersi conto di come sia fatto il vero pettegolezzo italiano. In grandi e piccole città gli italiani hanno preso l'abitudine di fare una passeggiata dopo cena, specialmente nelle piazze centrali per incontrarsi con amici e nemici e discutere degli eventi giornalieri, di politica e, naturalmente, di pettegolezzi. Nei paesi, dove tutti si conoscono, le storie raccontate in piazza si spargono come il fuoco. In città più grandi, quali Milano, i bar e i mezzi pubblici sono luoghi più convenienti per disseminare il pettegolezzo giornaliero.

Perciò, mentre la temperatura scende e sognate le vacanze, libertà e divertimento, consolatevi sapendo che dall'altra parte del globo le gioie dell'estate diventano le storie migliori dell'inverno!

In Italy, summer means vacations, festivals, and time with family and friends, but fall yields the pleasure of discussing events and adventures with schoolmates and colleagues. Summer brings a wide variety of celebrations and festivals to Italy, many of them focused on the arts. As in the United States, however, entertainment in Italy is varied--encompassing everything from showgirls on a game-show to a Verdi opera at La Scala.

June and July bring the Festival of Two Worlds to Spoleto. Directed by Pulitzer-Prize-winning composer Giancarlo Menotti, it is a festival of drama, dance, film, and music (concerts include classical music, opera, and jazz) designed as an opportunity to exchange artistic ideas between the United States and Europe.

One unique summer tradition takes place in the Tuscan town of Siena, one of the few medieval cities in the world that still retains its outer city wall. The brutal and exciting barebacked horse race called the Palio occurs twice a year in Il Campo, Siena's central piazza. Jockeys are chosen from among the seventeen neighborhoods or contrade of the city, where elaborate ritualistic preparations take place in the days preceding the race. Generally, it takes only a minute and a half for the horses to complete the three laps around the Campo in each heat! But don't let the race's brevity fool you; the Palio is a rigorous and often violent competition: injury and death are not uncommon as the horses and riders careen around the mattress-lined town square. The whole event is named after the banner, or Palio, that is awarded to the winning jockey at the end.

On a lighter note, the Ericsson Summer Festival in the neighboring Tuscan town of Lucca featured a host of musicians, including Joe Cocker, Ray Charles, Alanis Morissette, The Cranberries, Joan Baez, Natalie Cole, Lionel Richie & Giorgia, Oscar D'Leon, and Youssou N'Dour.

One of the most prestigious and exciting of Italy's summer opera festivals is held in the world's most intact Roman Amphitheater, the Arena di Verona. The spotlight was on Verdi this year at the 78th annual Festival, and his operas "Nabucco," "La Traviata," "La Forza del Destino," and "Aida" were performed in fully- staged productions in the open summer air. The festival runs from the end of June to the beginning of September every summer.

As in the United States, Italian entertainment figures are the center of gossip, and this extends even into the operatic realm. In 1996, Luciano Pavarotti, the legendary tenor, was the topic of discussion after tabloid photographs revealed him frolicking in the Caribbean with Nicoletta Mantovani (his secretary less than half his age). This scandal resulted in the breakup of Pavarotti's thirty-five-year marriage. More recently, tenor Andrea Bocelli has attracted attention for his sex appeal as well as his voice (although Bocelli is far more famous in the United States than he is in Italy).

Classical musicians are not the only source of gossip; like Americans, Italians fancy to know the details of all types of celebrities. A quick look at the gossip website at www.jumpy.it reveals some contemporary items of interest. According to jumpy the three "hottest topics" these days are:

1. The split-up of Italian model Anna Falchi and motorcycle champion Max Biaggi, and Ms. Falchi's subsequent relationship with soccer star Pippo Inzaghi
   
   
2. A mysterious liaison between the actors Elisabetta Gardini and Lorenzo Amato during the three day Isben festival on the Amalfi coast (despite the presence of Gardini's fiancée, the director Ferdinando Balestra)
   
   
3. Leonardo DiCaprio's presentation of his new girlfriend, Gisele Bundchen, to his mother.
   
   

If these bits of information seem like trivial pieces of media fluff, one need only look at the Italian art of taking an after-dinner stroll to get to the heart of real Italian gossip. In small cities and many larger ones, Italians have developed the practice of taking a walk after dinner, usually through the center of town, to see their friends and enemies and to strike up conversation about daily events, politics, and--it goes without saying--gossip. In small cities where everybody knows everybody else, stories can spread like fire. In larger cities, such as Milan, cafes and public buses or trams can be more convenient breeding grounds for daily gossip.

So as temperatures fall, and you long for vacations, freedom, and fun, console yourself with the knowledge that across the globe summer's delights make for winter's best stories!
