Really a new knowledge for me. I have been with an impression that Japan is homogenous in human race and all Japanese people are from the same origin. I also came to know after coming to Japan that Japanese people are not pure in race. They are a mix of other races. What made Japan unique is the 250 years of isolation from outside world so that the Japanese people got less opportunity to mix with other races for many years.

The story of Ainus tell bad history of Japanese discrimination. But why I see all Japanese people good in Tokyo? I have very less experience about Japan still ?

can one ask someone superior (上) the question 「てつだいましょうか？」 or does that sound rude? as if the person offering help is looking down on the other one?

Interesting article! Thanks for sharing this knowledge.

In India, we also have the same belief and superstition regarding the ghosts. It is exactly the same as Japanese yuurei. Ghosts have a purpose to wander in the earth.

In India, people believe that after fulfilling the mission of the onryoo, which is a negative female ghost who seek revenge, she will goodbye and disappear. People believe that the soul has got its freedom to travel to the heaven.

General believe in India is that good souls go to heaven and the really bad souls go to the hell. People who die with revenge or wild desire will wander in the earth. We also have helpful ghosts who have been helping many people to come out of their daily troubles in the life.

Though, we can label all those believes under the category of superstition, it gives color to the social life. Every society has made their own versions of ghosts depending on the history of that society.

Please enlighten us with more informative posts like this!

I have a Hirohito Golden Jubilee Commemorative gold coin that was given to my Father while he was Chairman of INCO. It is a 50y coin, and I can't find anything about it.

Ha! I bought Ramune today for the first time... Well it didn't go so well opening the first bottle and it gave people around me a good laugh, but I'm addicted!! Haha! I would like to find other flavours though, I only found one flavour, which I think is the 'original' one.

I LOVE strawberry ramune too!

If you take another look at the neck of the bottle, you'll find two little round indentations near the top. That's to give the marble a place to stop when you tilt the bottle.
It took me a few tries (plus a clean shirt!) to figure out, too :)
