Nóta (8/19/09 7:09 ET) I just replaced the middle section of this text since the parts originally in columns didn’t turn out as I expected.  I hope this layout is more soléite. 

Since there are between cúig mhíle agus sé mhíle teanga in the world, we could keep this thread going ar feadh i bhfad (for a long time).  But let’s just pick a few more well-known ones, and maybe a few less commonly taught.  Of course, if anyone wants to write in and suggest a few more, ceart go leor by me.  I’m not sure if the teangacha eachtardhomhanda, like Tliongáinis or the far less well documented Amtorais (ón phlainéad Amtor / Véineas) have ever been included in the 5 to 6K count, but with a lamháil earráide of míle, I guess it doesn’t really matter that much.

Fuaimniú & ciall: i bhfad [ih wahd]; eachtardhomhanda *[AKH-tur-γOH-un-duh]; lamháil [LAWV-aw-il] margin; meirgeach [MERzh-ig-yukh] rusty, and yes, that idiom is used i nGaeilge as well; ar an drochuair, unfortunately; labhraíonn [LOW-ree-un], labhairt [LOW-irtch]; labhraítear [LOW-ree-tcher] are spoken; gan a bheith ag trácht ar, not to mention; C-3PO, an uimhir 3 mar “uh trzhee” i nGaeilge, instead of the normal “three” as in English “threepio”; cumarsáid, communication. 

*By the way, the gamma symbol γ is used here to represent a sound for which there is no equivalent letter in the Roman alphabet.  It’s the “voiced” counterpart of the broad Irish “ch” sound, as in “teach” or “chomh,” which is “voiceless.”  The latter sound may be more familiar, from a European perspective, since it’s also in German, Welsh, and some Scottish English, as well as other languages. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cé Mhéad Duine? How Many People? Na hUimhreacha Pearsanta i nGaeilge (ar leanúint)

Finally returning to the uimhreacha pearsanta after the numerous events of the past couple of weeks, both happy and sad ones.  This time we’ll count from six to ten people, more on larger groups of people later!  First, a quick review, for one to five people: duine amháin or aonar (depending on the type of sentence), beirt, triúr, ceathrar and cúigear.  And, as you may recall, that got us through our discussion of the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, the Jackson 5, and Peter, Paul, and Mary.  You were testing yourself as you read that list, right?  Here’s the Irish in order of the musical groups just listed: ceathrar, beirt, cúigear, and triúr.

 

So now on to slightly larger groups of people, your quintets, sextets, septets, octets, nonets, and dectets.  But keep in mind, that while English has these specific terms for musical groups of various sizes, in Irish you’d use cúigear for any group of five people, such as five farmers (cúigear feirmeoirí) or beirt for, say, beirt otairinealaraingeolaithe (two otorhinolaryngologists). 

 

The personal numbers from six to ten continue to be fairly recognizable, if you keep the original number in mind:

Now that we’ve recently seen the capsúlbheathaisnéis of Frank McCourt, let’s try the one promised previously for Michael Jackson.  Although the lives of Jackson and McCourt were about as different as could be, I’ve structured the capsúlbheathaisnéisí as similarly as possible, hitting just some eochairphointí (key points).  Do you remember some of the eochairfhocail (keywords) from the McCourt bio?  They’re underlined here as well.  There are a few questions below, with sample answers, and, finally, any thoughts on the passing of an Rí Pop would be welcome as “comments.”

Harry Potter agus an Teanga Gaeilge? (ar leanúint)

Cén fáth an bhéim seo ar Harry Potter?  Tá mé ag Azkatraz 2009 faoi láthair, comhdháil faoi na leabhartha, na scannáin, agus rud ar bith a bhaineanns le Harry Potter. Why this emphasis on Harry Potter?  I’m at Azkatraz 2009 at the moment, a convention about the books, the movies, and anything related to Harry Potter.

Seo na freagraí a théanns leis na ceisteanna a bhí sa bhlag deireanach.  Cén chaoi ar éirigh leat? (or, for lucht Dhún na nGall, Cad é mar a d’éirigh leat?, How did you do, lit. how did it succeed with you?)

By the time this blog appears, I hope that some of you will have written in about your favorite characters or actors in the series.  Tá mé ag tnúth (looking forward to) le d’fhreagraí.

Was anyone wondering exactly what an “órchloch” is?  As a translation, it’s much more faithful to the original British version than the American version of Book 1.  I won’t exactly call the American version of Book 1 (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) a “translation,” but a lot of changes were made in the English to accommodate the American audience.  If you read the Irish version, keep in mind that it is translated directly from the British version. 

That should be major leid (clue).  The British title is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and an “órchloch” is a philosopher’s stone in alchemy.  “Cloch” is the basic word for “stone” and “ór” means “gold,” here used as a prefix.  Because of the prefix, “cloch” is lenited to become “chloch” and both “ch” sounds are pronounced with that German-Yiddish-Hebrew-Lallans “ch” sound, gutturally, i.e. in the throat.  Like “Achtung” or “Buch.”

If any readers are also Harry Potter fans, scríobh chugam más mian leat (if you wish) na leabhartha a phlé (to discuss)!  As Gaeilge, an méid is féidir (as much as possible)!

All the world’s a-buzz, once again, about Harry, so we may as well join the sluaite for this ábhar as well. Cá bhfuil na sé leabhar eile? Tá an chéad leabhar ar fáil sna teangacha Gaeilge, Breatnais, Laidin, agus SeanGhréigis, coimisiúnaithe ag Bloomsbury iad féin. Tá an dara leabhar ar fáil sa Laidin chomh maith, ach sin an méid. I was delighted when I learned that an Irish translation of Harry Potter had finally appeared, Harry Potter agus an Órchloch, but it was about seven years after the English version was published, whereas many other foreign language aistriúcháin (translations) had appeared within about a year of the English original. At this point, it is unclear if Bloomsbury intends to finish the series in the languages they commisioned. As the final stages of the series reach their conclusion (scannán amháin eile le teacht), it seems less likely that these editions will ever appear. I hope I get proven mícheart!
