Here are some of my favorite German proverbs. Let’s see if you can understand some of them.

Some of the spelling is doubtful. It may be from an older period, but doesn’t seem helpful to learners today.
re #5 Schmidt has to be Schmied – unless it’s intended as a joke. Glücks should be Glückes, for reasons of rhythm.

1) I believe that this one has something to do with a person speaking about something without knowing anything about it.
5) Each person make their own luck (or something like it – I’m brazilian, I think only about the related proverb in portuguese, not in english…)
9) A person talks bad things about something/someone, and she/he really likes it.
This German word ‘ Fertig ‘ confuses me a lot.
” Das Essen ist fertig ” means ‘The food is ready’ or ‘ The food is finished’ ?

“Das Essen ist fertig” can only mean “Dinner (lunch) is ready= time to eat”.
The trouble with “fertig” is that it has two meanings, which are almost opposites:
(1) ready (2) done= finished.
It must be hard for non-native speakers to know the difference.

Nobody is talking like this in Germany.
