C’est quoi ce quand-même?

Posted by Chanda

When I was a college student living in Paris in a French student residence , I was hanging out with some friends who were discussing music and singing along with some CDS that were playing…and just to get into the conversation probably, I said to one of my best (French) friends, “Tu chantes bien quand même.” (You sing well, nevertheless/still).  And the reply was, “C’est quoi ce quand même?”  (What’s this quand même?).  And my response was “Je ne sais pas.”  (I don’t know).  I had just said something that made really no sense in the context of that conversation.  I had probably recently learned or rather actively heard that word and was trying to use it.  We all do this - some more than others depending on the shy factor, willingness to take risks, etc.- but, it’s a natural part of language learning and although it can cause a little embarrassment at times (my face turned bright red, they said), it’s not a big deal.

So, my point is that you should and must make mistakes as that is how we learn.  The more mistakes you make, the more you’re probably speaking in French and the more feedback you’ll probably get, which means you’ll be able to make necessary corrections to your active vocabulary and gain fluency.

Allez-y!  Faites plein d’erreurs!

French Holidays - Armistice Day

Posted by Chanda

As we arrive at the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I, today is Armistice Day in France.  French President Nicolas Sarkozy is hosting an international ceremony at the Fort of Douaumont in Meuse where the battle of Verdun took place, with Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, the Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, the Australian Governor-General as well as the President of the German Senate and other leaders in attendance.  By inviting not only World War I allies, but also enemies to the ceremony, the French President is breaking with tradition in order to demonstrate that “ninety years after the end of the Great War, European countries are not only at peace with each other, but even better, have built a durable and profound Union together founded on reconciliation and respect for fundamental rights.”  Other solemn services will be taking place today throughout France in Paris as well as the various military cemeteries in northern France.

Remembrance Day is being marked in Belgium with a reading at St. George’s Memorial Church as well as Saint Martin’s Cathedral in Ypres.  A Poppy Parade, which is inspired by the John McCrae poem written near Ypres In Flanders Fields, is also taking place.  Poppy petals are worn as they are in several other countries, including Canada and Australia, for the same reason.  In the middle of the parade, a stop is made at the Belgian Army Monument for memorial.  Finally, as is tradition, a 45-minute Last Post ceremony including prayers, speeches, hymns, a wreath-laying ceremony and Reveille (a morning bugle or drum call that lets soldiers know it is time to wake up) takes place.  This ceremony as well as memorial concerts take place twice during the day.

There are also Remembrance Day services in Québec.  The large cemetery of Mount Royal is lined with blue Quebec flags and poppies are placed around the graves.  The wreath-laying ceremony was organized by the nationalist Société St Jean-Baptiste.  A song of peace by sovereigntist singer Raymond Levesque was played instead of the traditional O Canada.  In Montreal, the Royal Montreal Regiment and others participated in ceremonies around the city.

Veterans Day, as it is known in the US, commemorates the sacrifices made by the military and civilians at times of war.  It is held on November 11th as the Germans and the Allies signed an armistice in Compiègne, France to end major World War I hostilities which went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

French Basketball Player Tony Parker and His American Ties

Posted by Chanda

For anyone who follows sports, especially basketball, you hear a lot about Tony Parker, the NBA’s two-time All Star from France who is currently playing for the San Antonio Spurs.  Now, although Tony grew up in France after moving there when he was just three weeks old and is a member of the French national basketball team, he was actually born in Belgium on May 17, 1982, and to an American father and a Dutch mother.  His father, Tony Parker Sr., was a Loyola University Chicago basketball player who moved to Rouen when Tony was a baby to play for that city’s professional team.  True to his French roots, Tony was initially more interested in soccer until he became a huge fan of Michael Jordan.  He attended the prestigious French government-run Institut National du Sport (National Institute for Sports and Physical Education) in Paris.  In spite of aggressive recruiting attempts by various NCAA schools, Parker remained in France.  He played in the French national league for two years before being drafted by the Spurs in 2001.  He is their starting point guard and has helped lead the team to three NBA Championships (2003, 2005, 2007).  He was named the NBA Finals MVP in 2007.

The NBA star has a brother, Terence, who continues to play in the French league.  Tony married the very famous American actress Eva Longoria in a lavish wedding at the Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois Church in Paris on July 7, 2007, with many of her Desperate Housewives co-stars in attendance.  It was once the parish church of French kings.

Vas-y Tony!
