        Today, we are going to go on a journey to the depths of the Arabic Dictionary to discover some of its secrets. We will look up the root verb ظهرَ   and explore some of its derivatives.

* ظهَرَ    [V. I.] = to appear or become clear and visible.  

                  Ex. – ظهرَ المُمَثلُ على خشبة المسرح  = The actor appeared on the stage.   

ظهَرَ  + على  [Ph.V.] = To overcome an enemy.

                  Ex. –ظهَرَ الجيشُ على العدو = The army overcame the enemy.

* ظُهُور  [N. U.] =  uncovering of something / appearance

                   Ex. – اندهشتُ لِظهُور القمر نهاراً

                 = I felt surprised because of the appearance of the moon during the day. َ

*  أظهَرَ  [V. T.] = to show (something).  

                 Ex. –أظهَرَ الفيديو الحقيقة  = The video showed the reality.

* إظهار  [N. U.] =  the act of showing or explaining something. 

* تظاهرَ   [V. I.] = to demonstrate.

               Ex. – تظاهرَ الكثيرُ من الشباب اليوم = Many young people demonstrated today.    

* مُتظاهِر  [N. C.] =  demonstrator / The person who demonstrates. Pl. متظاهرون  or متظاهرين 

               Ex.  – تجمّع المتظاهرون حول البيت الأبيض

                = The demonstrators gathered around the White House. 

مُظاهرة  [N. C.] =  demonstration. Pl. مُظاهرات  

               Ex. – زادت المظاهرات قبل الثورة

             = The demonstrations increased before the revolution.

استظهَرَ  [V. T.] = to learn (something) by heart / to memorize (something).

                Ex. – استظهرَ محمدٌ القصيدةَ   = Muhammad memorized the poem.

*  الظّاهِرُ [N.] = The Manifest One (an attribute of Allah)

*   ظاهِرة  [N. C.]  = phenomenon. Pl. ظـواهـِـر

              Ex. – الاحتباسُ الحراريُ ظاهرةٌ خطيرةٌ = Global warming is a dangerous phenomenon.

*  ظـَـهْـرُ  [N. C.] = 1- The back of anything. Pl. أظهُر  or ظُهُور 

                           2- Any of the animals that are used for carrying people or things. 

*  الظـُهْرُ   [N. U.] = Noontime

*  الظـَّهـيـرة  [N. U.] = Noontime. 

(Note: N.=Noun /C.= Countable / U.= Uncountable / V.= Verb / Ph. V. = Phrasal Verb / Adj.= Adjective / Adv.= Adverb / Prep.=Preposition / Pl.= Plural)

* صَدَقَ    [V.I. T.] = to tell the truth.  

                                  e.g. – Ali told the truth. صَدَقَ علىٌ (في الحديث / في كلامه  

                                        - Ali told me the truth. صَدَقـََنِي علىٌ القولَ

صَدَقَ النصيحةَ  = To give someone a true and sincere advice.

                                  e.g. – Ali gave me a sincere advice. صدقني علىٌ النصيحة

*  صَدَقَ الوعدَ   = to keep one’s promise

                                  e.g. – Ali kept his promise to me. صَدَقني علىٌ الوعدَ  

* صَدوق / صَادِق   [N. C. /Adj.] = A person who always tells the truth = truthful = straightforward.

                                   e.g. – Ali is a straightforward person. علىٌ شخصٌ صَادقٌ / صَدوقٌ   

صَادِقون / صَادِقين / صَادِقات  = plural of صادق  .

*  الصِّدْقُ  [N. U.] = telling the truth.

* رجُلُ صِدقٍ   = a truthful man.

* امرأةُ صِدقٍ  = a truthful woman.

*  أصْدَقَ (المرأةَ   [V.I.] =  to give or name a dowry for a woman before marriage.

*  الصَّداقُ   [N. U.] = dowry given to a woman before marriage.

* صَادَقَ  [V. T.] =  to take a person as a friend = befriend.

                              e.g. – Ali befriended the girl. صَادَقَ علىٌ البنتَ  

 *  الصَّدَاقة  [N. C.] = friendship, pl. صَداقات

صَدِيق  [N. C.] = friend; pl. أصدِقاء.

                             e.g. – I have a lot of friends. لِي أصدقاءٌ كثيرون 

* تَصَادَقَ   [V. I.] = (1)  to be friends.

                              e.g. – The enemies became friends. تَصادَقَ الأعداءُ

         (2) (on something على شيء ) [V. T.] to agree on something a may sign a contract.

                 e.g. – The two leaders agreed to end the war تصادقَ القائدانِ على إنهاءِ الحربِ .     

* صَدَّقَ   [V. T.] = (1) to believe someone or something.

                 e.g. – The teacher believed the boy. صَدَّقَ الأستاذُ الولدَ  

        (2) (on something على شيء ) [V. T.] to agree on something and may sign a contract.

التصديق  [N. U.] = (1) believing that someone is telling the truth.

                   (2) (on something على شيء ) legal signing or agreeing on something.         

*   تـَصَدَّقَ  [V.I.] = to give money or a charity.  

                e.g. – In Ramadan, Muslims give money as charity a lot. يتصدَّقُ المسلمون كثيراَ فى رمضان

الصَّدَقة  [N. C.] = money given to the poor or any act of charity. Pl. صدَقات

* حبَّ      [V. I. T.]= to fall in love or to love someone,

                                  e.g. – Ali fell in love.  حبَّ علىٌ / وقع علىٌّ في الحبِّ    

                                         - Ali loved the girl.  حبَّ علىٌّ الفتاةَ  

 

*  أحبَّ     = (1) [V. T.] to love someone or something or fall in love with someone.

                                   e.g. – أحبَّ علىٌّ الفتاةَ     = Ali loved the girl.

                                         - أحبَّ الأولادُ الفيلمَ      = The boys loved the movie.  

                  (2) [V. I.] to produce grains or seeds.

                                   e.g. – أحبَّ الزرعُ    = The plants produced grains.

 

*  الحُبُّ     [N. U.] = love; e.g. – الحُبُّ شيءٌ جميلٌ   = Love is a beautiful thing.

 

* الحَبُّ / الحُبوب      [N. C.] = grains or seeds; sing. حـَـبَّـة   = a grain.

  

 مُحبٌ    [N. C.] = (male) lover, pl. مُحبّون / مُحبّين   = (male) lovers.

 

* مُحبّةٌ     [N. C.] = (female) lover, pl. مُحبّاتٌ  = (female) lovers.

 

* المَحبَّةُ   [N. U.] = love; e.g. يعيش المصريون معاً في محبّةٍ = Egyptians live together in love.

*  حَبيبٌ  [N. C.] = (male) beloved person, pl. أحباءٌ / أحبةٌ = the beloved ones.

 

 حَبيبة   [N. C.] =  (female) beloved person, pl. حبيبات / حبائِب = the beloved ones.

*  مَحبوبٌ   [Adj.] = (male) beloved, pl. مَحبوبون / مَحبوبين = (be)loved.

 

* مَحبوبةٌ  [Adj.] =  (female) beloved, pl. محبوبات = (be)loved.

  

* حبَّبَ    = (1) [V. T.] + prep. (to إلى ): to make someone love someone or something.

                              e.g. – و لكن اللهَ حبَّبَ إليكم الإيمانَ = But Allah made you love faith.

                  (2) [V. I.] to produce grains or seeds that appear after a plant grows for a while.

                              e.g. – حبَّبَ الأرزُ = The rice produced grains.

     

* تحبَّبَ     [Phrasal. V.] + prep. (to إلى ) = to show love towards someone.

                              e.g. – تحبَّبَ الولدُ إلى الفتاةِ = The boy showed love to the girl.

  

*  استحبَّ  [V. T.] = to prefer something or like it more.

                               e.g. – استحبّوا هذا الشاطئ  = The preferred this beach.

   

   مُستحَبٌ / مُحبَّبٌ  [Adj.] = favorable or desirable;

                               e.g. – هذا شيءٌ مُستحبٌ / مُحببٌ  = This a desirable / favorable thing.

* جَمَعَ    [V. T.] = to collect / to unite / to pile up / to add;

                   e.g..جمع الفلاح البرتقال   = The farmer collected / piled up the oranges.  

                            -   جمع الله القلوب  = Allah united the hearts.

                           -  جمع الطالب الأعداد   = The student added the numbers.

جَمْعُ  [N. C.] = (1) crowd of people; pl. جُمُوع  

                             (2) The act of adding or collecting or piling

* يومُ الجَمع  [N.] = doomsday / judgment day  

مَجمُوع   [N. C.] = total; pl. مَجَامِيع  

مَجمُوعَة  [N. C.] = a group; pl. مَجمُوعَات

جَمَاعَة  [N. C.] = a big number or a group of people; pl. جَمَاعَات  

جَامِع  [N. C.]  = (1) mosque; pl. جَوامِع

                                (2) a person who collects / collector; pl. جامعون / جامعين  

جَامِعَة  [N. C.] = university; pl. جامعات  

جَمعية   [N. C.] = committee / association / organization; pl. جمعيات  

* جَمَّعَ    [V. T.]  = to collect or gather together;

                           e.g. – جَمَّعَ الآذان الناسَ للصلاة = The call gathered the people for prayer.  

أَجْمَعَ    [ph.v. + على ] =  to agree on doing something;

                                  e.g. – أجمعَ القوم على الإضراب = The people agreed on the strike.

                                    = (2) to be determined to do something;

                                   e.g. – أجمعَ محمد على السفر = He was determined to travel.

إِجْمَاعٌ  [N. U.] = (whole) agreement on something;

                        e.g. – هناك إجماعٌ على موعد الانتخابات = There is an agreement on the elections date.

جَمِيع  [N.] = All / the whole ( Confirmation noun);

                                e.g. جميع الطلاب حضروا  = All the students attended.  

                                   -  عملتُ الواجبَ جميعَهُ = I did all the homework.   

أجمَعْ  [N./ M.] = whole / all (It is a noun of confirmation) The plural is أجمعون / أجمعين ;

                                            e.g.  -  العالمُ أجمعْ = The whole world.

                                                - أخذتُ حقي أجمع  = I got all my share.

                                             -  جاء الضيوف أجمعون = All the guests came.

جَمْعَاء  [N. F.] = whole / all ( it is a noun of confirmation);

                                     e.g.- المدرسة جَمعاء = The whole school.

*  اِجْـتـَمَعَ   [V. I.] = to gather together / to have a meeting;

                            e.g. – اجتمع القوم بعد الحريق  = The people gathered together after the fire.

                                   – اجتمع المدير بالموظفين = The manager had a meeting with the employees.

*  اِجْتِمَاع   [N. C.] = gathering / meeting;  pl. اجتماعات  

الاجتماع  [N. U.] = social science = علم الاجتماع  

مُجْتَمَع   [N.C.] = society / community; pl. مجتمعات  

                              e.g. – يخدم العلماءُ المجتمعَ = Scientists serve the society.      

تَجَمَّعَ   [V. I.] = to gather / or / come from different directions;

                                   e.g. تَجَمَّعَ الماء  = water gathered.
