Posts from January 2010

This post deals with conjugation of verbs that begin with the vowel (و)(الفعل المثال الواوي), e.g. (وصل) ‘arrived, (وعد) ‘promised, etc. In the present tense, which usually involves the use of prefixes, the first vowel of the verb is substituted by the prefix, i.e. the vowel which occurs in the beginning of the verb is deleted and the prefix only appears. Please note that this applies only to verbs that begin with (و); verbs that begin with (ي) are different.

Irregular verbs

This post deals with verbs that begin with a vowel (الفعل المثال), e.g. (وصل) ‘arrived, (وعد) ‘promised, (يئس) ‘gave up hope’, etc. In the past tense, they take the same endings like any other verb, this is mainly because past tense verbs are conjugated with suffixes, or endings. Therefore, the beginning of the verbs, i.e. the vowel remains unaffected

When I though of writing this post, I wanted to make a vocabulary list about the topic of hobbies (الهوايات), but I realized that it was too broad, so I decided to limit  the list to sports (الرياضات), yet it was still too broad, so I decided to make a list of words related to ball games only. I was surprised how many ball sports there are, but this is a list of the ones common in Arabic. I hope you find it useful.

Fayrouz (فيروز) is one of the most famous Arab singers. She was born on 21st November 1935 in Lebanon. In her childhood, she used to sing at school concerts and to neighbors and friends in her family’s simple house in Beirut. At one of the school concerts, Mohammed Fleyfel became impressed by her voice and encouraged her to join the Lebanese Conservatoire. After that, she was appointed a chorus singer at a radio station in Beirut. Halim El-Roumi discovered her talent and gave her the name Fayrouz. Later, she met Rahbani Brothers (الأخوان رحباني) who worked with her extensively. They wrote and composed hundreds of songs an many plays and movies for her, and in 1955 she got married to Assi Rahbai.
